It isn’t the nfl or the nba. I don’t think that team can work there way out of a deal like that

Hate to burst your bubble, But Kovalchuk is a 35+ contract, So you can't just break it. Like it or not you're stuck with his $6.25M salary unless LA retains some here.

If the player agrees to terminate that contract (retire probably) it is technically possible

Nope because Pavel Datsyuk was a 35+ contract, He was dealt to Arizona and they terminated his contract so he could play in the KHL, But the cap hit of $7.5M remained on the books. Even if he agreed to terminate his contract and go to the KHL whatever team that acquires his rights is still stuck with his $6.25M contract.

But it would still count on LA payroll since he is more then 35 yesrs old. Zetterberg, luongo are still on the payroll even if they are retired

The only benefit to mutual termination of Kovalchuk's contract from a team perspective is that it opens up a roster spot that the Kings can give to someone else. Unless they can trade him, the Kings are stuck with his full cap hit for this season and next.
