Question for Leafs fans

Created by: justaBoss
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 14, 2019
Published: Nov. 14, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Let's imagine a hypothetical situation where Babcock gets sacked at the same day that Sheldon Keefe signs a contract with another team. I'm curious, who would you want to have as a coach when Babcock leaves, if Keefe was not available?

I am not really sure who but it has to be someone who plays their stars longer then 18 minutes a game, realize that Ceci is a third pairing d man, that Freddy shouldn't be playing over 55 games, and Toronto is a team that plays offensively based NOT defensively based

As a Stars fan I get that goalie thing. We have a great duo in Bishop-Khudobin. Actually I think it was statistically the second best in the league, only after NYI last year. In today's league it's very hard to be successful with only one solid goalie, you need a good reserve goalie as well.

Ceci is a third pairing d man (at best), you’re right about that. Problem is, they don’t have better options.

First let's getting over this nonsense about Ceci. Generally your best players play the most minutes. So if you looking at who is the best Leaf RHD this season, it's probably Ceci.
Checks stats on other goalies. Some goalies play as much Andersson and with worse travel schedules. It's seem to be Leaf thing that Andersson is overworked. Maybe true, then so are other goalies.
Agree with you some of the stars should be playing more minutes. Especially if playing "easy minutes" on the PP.

To answer Burger Boss hypothecial question. Betcha Keefe is highest paid AHL coach. In his contract he probably isn't allowed to leave mid season. Very possible the Leafs have a "right to match" clause also.
As a Leaf fan, I'm not worried. Babcock should be the first coach fired this season. I would have done a couple of years ago.

Yeah, this was purely hypothetical. I asked once couple of weeks ago like this about their next coach and almost 100% of the answers were Keefe. I wanted to hear opinions without there being an obvious option...

I know it's largely up to the players, but must say Keefe seems to know how to coach. Year after year and with the usual AHL turnover he has competitive teams. Watching his teams, they seem organized to their play.

I don't think Keefe leaves in the first place. if the leafs fire Babcock and hand him the keys, assuming same pay and all, he won't turn it down to uproot his entire life to a new city- he'd take the job

If Sheldon Keefe is not available, then the Leafs should hire Doug (Killer) Gilmour to coach. He would be the ultimate player coach and I think all the players would go to war for him because he is was one of the greatest Leafs captains in Maple Leaf History who played every game as if it was a game 7 in a Stanley Cup Final. They should atleast hire Gilmour as an Assistant Coach to help Babcock.

Keefe is signed for two next years by Leafs to be HC of Marlies and is I would say surely the one who gets the reigns after Babs (Babs should be gone after this b2b against Pens and Bruins). So this is completely unrealistic. But lets say Keefe is not an option in this hypothetical scenario, I would looooove to see what a guy like Dominique Ducharme can do with this team (and I know he is MTLs assistant coach, its all hypothetical now lol)

Please explain how the Leafs are a "defensive based" and you want them to be a "offensive based" team? The Leafs are near the top of the league while 5 on 5 in the following offensive categories: Corsi For (1), Corsi For % (3), Shots For (3), Goals For (6), Scoring Chances For (6), etc. And you want them to be MORE offensive??? Scoring goals is one thing that's not a problem. Giving up goals and special teams are a problem.

It's a very fine line between winning and losing games in the NHL. Improvement on special teams and eliminating the 2-3 major brain farts per game they usually have and you would see wins coming much more consistently. Paying less attention to their defensive game and trying to score more is the worst idea.

Babs is trying to get Toronto to play more defensively sound, Toronto was built to win by having the puck more and transitioning quickly to offense. Toronto is having less and less chances per game and their defense is not really improving. This is a problem. Toronto needs to be able to play more in the offensive zone and stop being a boring team (which is the way they are playing right not). Games used to be fun to watch but now it seems like more of a chore then anything and it's frustrating with a team with this much talent

Spot on.

I find that if I drink beer while I watch the games this season its a bit more enjoyable. I don't find them beautiful like Babcock, but beer helps me to tolerate some of it.

Maybe Babcock should down a beer or two before games. That might spark some creativity lol.
