Who is the new most underrated player

Created by: yikes

Description
Question I saw on Twitter; and Hertl was brought up as taking over Barkov’s “seat” (Barkov should be moved on from and considered top tier by almost everyone).

Thought I pose this question with some suggested guys, let me know if I’m missing anyone.

I have listed 10 players imo from quickly going through every team as guys who are criminally underrated. For example; Barkov is not here as he is so good he should not be underrated by a knowledgeable fan; same with Couturier.

I have ordered them in order of guys who I think is more underrated. For example I am not saying Danualt it better then RNH; I’m saying who is more underrated in terms of have good the individual is to how that individual is regarded. Like Slavin would be there at 10 but I feel like he has slowly become less underrated.

Sean Couturier is a top 5 player in the NHL and no one ever seems to mention him. You mention Lindholm and Pesce which are both top 4 LHD/RHD. RNH is ass.

Bäckström in DC has been pretty underrated his entire career.

Definitely Slavin

Disclosed him because (although top 5 is a bit high) he gotten more discussion from everyone bringing him up. It’s funny cause I didn’t even remember his name until I was about to post this and realized wait I have to mention him as I passed over philly. If you bring him up with a knowledge hockey fan I’d expect to hear the lowest say top 15; if anyone doesn’t have him in that range 5-15 then they’re kinda dreaming tbh. Like if you say marner or Matthews then you gotta day Couturier above them and if he isn’t then your list begins to fall apart to me; and if Barkov isn’t above those 3 then I just think you could be hard stuck

Put Wilson over him. IT takes 1 google search of most points from Bäckström 2006 draft class to humble someone who doesn’t think he’s ALL THAT. Because he can make a HOF case for sure after he retires (a case not saying he’s got a legit nomination case).

Philly fans know how good Coots is trust me. Look at Giroux as well....hardly any love outside the fan base but all he does is put up points. His collective stats the last few years are amoungst some pretty good names.

Couturier and Giroux are both super overlooked I agree but using points is an argument is not a good one.

Points is a huge argument; numbers matter in the end. Obviously Couturier; points aren’t the say all in his conversation. But for giroux; his game is points. They matter when discussing giroux

I think Slavin is past the underrated phase. I think the rest of the league is seeing what Canes fans have seen for 3 years now.

Pesce is the most underrated Canes player, and likely one of the must underrated and under appreciated defenseman in the league.

Non- Canes comment...I maintain that Mark Stone is the the most underrated player in the league. I think he’s the best winger in the game. He’s obviously gotten his praise with the high profile situation in Ottawa, the trade to Vegas, the contract. However, when the best players in the league are talked about...rarely is stone mentioned l.

Personally I didn’t include him or mention him as I legitimately think he’s is a top 5 cusp in the league. If you ask me it’s:

Mcdavid
Crosby
Mackinnon (order these 3 however you want no need to argue)
Ovi
Stone
(Kane right behind, kuch if he can bounce back is close here too)
Barkov and Tavares close behind

I think Stone is one of the most scary players in the league. I see Mcdavid and I’m “scared” but the sharks have been able to shut him down/ slow him down. We’ve tried with stone and haven’t been successful because if you shut him down offensively he’ll shut you down defensively and then probably get a takeaway like he always does and create a scoring opportunity. Stone legitimately is someone I hate see coming on the ice (and he see him a lot as sharks fans). Mcdavid scares me but like I know what’s coming; stone scares me in both ends and it you can’t slow him.

Another hockey fan sleeping on RNH. He is so good defensively and gets 0 credit for it becuase he was the first overall pick. If he was a later pick, everyone would talk about how important he is to the oilers team, but because he was first overall and isn't generational, people label him as a bust.

A better argument for Giroux would be?

I get points aren’t the tell all for Coots as his 2 way game is stellar.

Shall we discuss Ovie and not factor in points as well then? Points in an argument isn’t good right?

RNH isnt good defensively so I'm really not sure what youre talking about. Hes a bottom 6 player who was drafted 1st overall, thats a bust.

Giroux drives offense like a truck and is solid defensively and is elite in possession. He has great point totals but those are secondary to his ability so drive offense. Ovi is still a solid play driver with a world class shot and insane xG rates.

Last ten years.

Ovie third in points
Giroux fourth.

Separated by a few points. But points don’t matter in an argument right? I’d say those totals make him pretty damn underrated. Hardly any love on the national scale with results like that for his career.
