Just saw the evolving wild tweet "you vs the guy she told you not to worry about".
So if Ceci plays better than Barrie throughout the entire season, does that make the off season a bit easier?

Just bc Ceci has been better than Barrie doesn't mean he's been good... He has been barely over a replacement level player...

Firstly Ceci has not been better than Barrie, Barrie just hasn't been scoring points. That being said, he is far better than a replacement player. I think anyone who actually watches the Leafs this season would have to admit that while he isn't exceptional, he's been much better than what people on here have said he would be.

the tweet hes referencing shows some charts that say that Ceci>Barrie, and over his career, the only thing that made Ceci better than a replacement level player was his PIMs (or lack thereof) according to a different tweet by the same people that tweeted the Ceci>Barrie so far this year tweet

Why is Spezza resigned....or in the NHL next season. Doubt if DeSmith is the answer for the Leafs as a goalie and if he was, he cost more than an AHLer.
There ain't no way the Leafs can go with Ceci and Holl in the top six. A trade of cap heavy forwards is going to me necessary so cap can be spent on two NHL competent Dman. (Though I think both Ceci and Holl are OK), improvements are needed.

Barrie has been horrible defensively easily our worst Dman... including Marincin. Has not been good offensively and has been average with puck movement.

People are going to laugh at that defence but it isn’t horrible. If ceci’s deal is max front loaded he will be easy to move when Lilly is ready. Holl can be moved up and down to allow Dermott to move over so sandin can be moved up.

I would try to get Holl on a 4 year deal.a 1.5-2m.

Think that is the same thing you said last offseason. The leafs won’t be moving their core pieces.

I could see a move being made for defensive Dman over ceci. To me, Holl is ready for a top 4 role.

Holl is turning into a dependable player. And yup, he could come in on a great deal, which would go along way in shoring up the d next year. It could be something as simple as

Rielly/Dermott
Muzzin/Holl
Sandin/Lily

It isn't name brand sexy but I think it could work just fine.

Yup, I don’t mind that D... for 1 year. It leaves little room to move up sandin. I would really like to see Rielly, Dermott and sandin on the left.

On the right... Holl, (Phillipe Myers please) liljegren.

If Muzzin was a rhd things would be just about perfect. That said, and I know it's sacrilege to suggest Rielly on his off hand, but I'd like to see

Muzzin/Rielly
Dert/Holl
Sandin/Lilly

Iirc, we did see that top pairing in a couple early games when Muzzin showed up, and it wasn't bad at all.. Otherwise, I'd like to see Rielly/Dert, and Sandin moves up the lineup as Muzzin hits the age curve and shows signs of slowing down.

I agree that Muzzin is excellent at hockey, and I'd love if he stayed a leaf.
Since he's left handed, 31 and will probably be in the 5-6M range, would it be that ridiculous to re-sign Ceci instead? That's only IF Ceci continues to play well and even improves some.
The team above is an example of a pretty low cap increase, and of a longer term deal with Dermott having a higher AAV.

Maybe my point was proven last summer when they didn't move some cap to add quality Dman help.

Let's see. Losing Zaitsev, Gardiner and Hainsey....replaced by Ceci, Barrie and Holl. Leafs Dmen are worse than last year and that's just on paper. Barrie has been awful, he's losing a ton of money in his contract year..
I look at the Colorado trade as Kerfoot for Kadri. One year of Barrie for the potential of Rosen. I liked the trade last summer thinking Barrie would be an equal to Gardiner for a year....far from it.

With the response that Ceci is getting from the fan base I doubt he'd want to re-sign in Toronto..

I dunno, tough seeing another loss tonight but it seems to me that Holl is playing with more confidence in each game. I think he's our best rhd d right now. Lock that guy up now on the cheap, let the season play out as it will and count on a d core of Rielly, Dermott, Holl, Sandin and Lily. Maybe re-sign Muzzin, maybe spend his money plus trade a guy like Johnsson to get some cap space for a serious partner for Rielly.

I dunno. I think I need a drink..

The sadest part is Premium contracts and 50M for 7 FWs means the same state of things will continue for next 5-6 years....patching D with 775k players and playing two wingers as Ds ( Rielly and Barrie )

It's a fair comment on the cap structure. It's more than top heavy with a focus on offense. So, who would you suggest it is that should go? Willy at 7 or Mitch at 11?

It's a theoretical question cause I agree with Po, I doubt any of the core is leaving.. they're betting on them. JT and AM certainly aren't going anywhere . And the cap hits can't be changed now. So, now what? I'm honestly curious about your response.

From my pow none of those two, just Matthews and Marner should be signed properly....would give 4M surplus to hunt defensive D to complement Rielly next year, so instead of 12,6M next year for 3 Ds to sign ( assuming Sandin abd Liljegren will play 3rd Pair ) you would have 16,6M at disposal......much bigger chance to fish some quality with that kind of money.....and ofc theres still a backup issue...

Well, sure. But that can't be changed. So, how do they move forward now? Your point on the leafs cap structure is valid. There are a few ways to remedy that from what I can see. But I'm curious on your take.

Let me describe the path of "my take" :

i fell into a "i-dont-really-give-a-sh.t-anymore" after 2008 when Sundin left and The Office was showing for years their mindset is built with McCabe and Kaberle as enough to bring parade into town. Jason Blake, Phil Kessel ( and his picks ) and JvR defenitelly werent the moves to fill the void and still noone gave a flying ef about building the D properly. And then three kids came and they signed Tavares. So i came up from my slumber and started to be active in discussions about TML cause future was bright again....but then it came up that Dubas is mixture of Chiarelli and the old garniture of Ferguson, Burke and Nonis that pushed the team into what im calling Dark Ages. And with the revelation that proper D cant be built for shekels left on the table im actualy back in 2008 state again.....tho you can always call me out for being wrong from TV coverage of Stanley Parade in Toronto. I will watch it from my swedish home.....
