Thoughts On The Pens

Description
I can't believe that I've seen people say that the Pens are not a playoff team. I don't understand why they still think that. It's like they haven't looked at the way this team's been playing.

Looking at the Penguins' last 8 games, they've played extremely well. They look like the 2016 team which used their relentless speed and forecheck to heavily outplay their opponents. Every game, they have skated circles around their opponents and buried them in the offensive zone generating chance after chance. They get around 40 shots on goal a night and concede around just 25.

It's true that their record doesn't reflect their play, but keep in mind the Penguins have not gotten very consistent goaltending during this stretch. They've challenged the Bruins and Islanders very hard, heavily outplayed both of them. If this team figures out it's goaltending, plus get Crosby and Letang back, then the rest of the league better look out.

What'd y'all think?

I think they’re a lot better off than people are led to believe. The Forward depth and play on defense are worlds better compared to last season. They’ll definitely make playoffs if they continue to get consistent goaltending.

A. it's not just about them.
B. they haven't skated around all their opponents. I don't know where you get that. Toronto held a corsi advantage over the penguins last game. They were pinned into their end a lot.

They are a bubble team that is dangerous with Crosby. Without him, it's a 50/50 if they make the playoffs.
Geno is good, he can help carry them while Crosby is gone. But at some point the weakness down the middle will show and further injuries could really derail this team.

You look at the division and you can see where they are in the standings. tied for 4th with Philly. Behind CAR who is a solid team, WSH who is a solid team, and NYI who beat them last year.
Right now they hold the #1 wild card. With most of those games including Letang and Crosby. How does the team play if both are out long term? What happens if more injuries keep piling up?

Can they realistically catch teams once they pull ahead, if they pull ahead. I don't know if they can catch WSH we'll see, it's a long year. But the way they are playing they may pull away with the division from the Pens if the pens aren't winning at a good pace.

The Metro is the hardest division in hockey. There are 5 good teams in it every year. This year is no different. Someone isn't going to make it.

The Leafs game was pretty much over halfway through the second period, in which at that point they heavily outplayed their opponents. Watch the game vs the Bruins and Islanders. It was an example of how they played in the 2016 playoffs. Too many people forget that championship and downplay the brilliance of that team. If the Pens suffer more injuries to key players, then they will not make the playoffs. But if they get healthy and play the way they did vs BOS and NYI, then they are the team to beat.
