I think it's insane for Leafs' fans to just assume that firing Babcock is gonna solve all of their problems. Dubas built this team around the most top-heavy core in the league. No defense and no toughness will always equal no Cup. Same as it always has been.

The defensive issue is a lack of a 5 man cohesive unit in the dzone that iOS entirely a coaching issue. You can't have a d core with guys as good as Rielly, Muzzin, Barrie, Dermott and the other two and say they are trash. Those 4 are all terrific players.

The interesting thing to me is Colliton had a similar system to start the season in Chicago, a dump and chase grind in the O-zone and a center being very low in his own end which limited the offense off the rush. It was a struggle for the hawks to score. He made an adjustment, implementing a more loose system to let the skill players play, and the hawks look like a playoff team. Toronto is not a grinding team, and they don't have to be right now, it's the regular season, not the postseason. I do think they need a different system that utilizes their strengths properly.

Barrie is struggling because he's paired with Muzzin, an aggressive shut down D man (I know he can score, but they acquired him to shut down top lines). The hawks paired Keith with Gustafsson, two fantastic puck moving D-men, and it's dynamite. Barrie needs to play with Rielly, Ceci is a better complement for Muzzin rather than Rielly, especially if they try to implement a new system like Chicago.

I’m in no way implying firing Babcock is some magical elixir. It is, however, the most logical choice. Trading the players that are underperforming isn’t an option since they happen to be a lot of the core. For me removing Babcock is less of a issue with him and more of a remove the excuse and show me what you’re made of thing. Getting him out now would give Dubas time to re-evaluate his core for the off season. Either way, things look bleak in leaf land.

I definitely agree. The only hesitation in firing Babcock, or any coach for that matter, is that GM's can use it as a tool for alleviating pressure from themselves. If Dubas waits it out til next summer, he'll effectively buy himself extra time to sort things out. He can basically write off this season as bad coaching and bring in his own guy (he inherited Babcock). If self-preservation is a real concern, he can definitely distract from the fact that he built this team. Although I really don't know how much say Babcock had in the Barrie and Ceci trades, or any of the major contracts that were handed out.
