Whats a Stan to do

Description
The Hawks are on a tear and what I like most about it, is that the change was systematic. Sooo...yeah, they absolutely can keep this going. Probably not at this pace...13 points in the last 7 games isn't a realistic pace for any team. The transition game looks so much easier for them. DeHaan and Maatta are really helping the back end. Obviously having Murphy back is a big help too. I don't want to read too much into 1 or 2 games because you're never as good as your best game and never as bad as your worst game...but... Seabrook's Plus 5 night in Nashville had to feel good. It's nice to see Seabrook have an NHL caliber defenseman opposite him. Saying that isn't going to make him any younger/faster, but just having faith in your partner that they'll be in the right spot is huge.

With all that said, Stan still has work to do. I give him a lot of credit. Sometimes I feel like I personally give him too much credit, but he's made really good moves this year IMO. Going forward.

A.) Get Lehner extended Jan 1 if you can.

B.) Maximize your return for Gus. Gus is back to his old self. Scoring goals, but even more importantly...making plays...jumping in...being a driving part of this successful turn around.

C.) Shed Smith. He's also had a nice run the past few games, but his play is more the effect of the turn around...not part of the cause for the turn around.

D.) Stay healthy and continue to develop the prospects. I'm 100% fine with Dach playing the 4th line. I'd actually suggest swapping Nylander and Kubalik for a few games. There's no shame if you're not on the top line as a rookie. Take meaningful development steps where ever you can find them.

I'm not so sure about moving Gustafsson anymore, especially if the team doesn't have full confidence in Boqvist. I think the hawks will hang on to him at this point (If still in playoff contention of course). I can see Caggiula being moved in the offseason, but other than that I think Stan stands pat for a while. All 4 lines are scoring, the defense is slowly taking shape, the goaltenders have been excellent. I think now it's just time to stay the course.

I don't think there's a confidence issue with Boqvist. I understand he only scored 1 goal, but I'm really not that worried about his point total. I watched him play with the Ice Hogs and the Hawks...he looks like he's a better player with the Hawks. It's a small sample size, but I really do think his development is better off with the Hawks vs Ice Hogs. I think he was the guy sent down because he can be freely moved up/down without consequence. Stan would need to waive Slater. He's learned that lesson...Dahlstrom...

I'd love to get more...I just don't think other teams would be willing to send more. Shedding Smith's $3.25M cap hit is huge for next year too.

That's a fair point, I just don't know if any return is worth moving Gus, having this much depth is a luxury to have.

I also think Gus is still better then Boqvist. That will change as Boqvist has more upside but Gus as of now is the better player. As such, the way the Hawks are playing, I don't see Gus being moved unless the Hawks are clearly out of the playoff race.

You're probably right that it's not super realistic, but do you think we're cup contenders? If the answer is yes...ok I get it. If the answer is no...I really don't see the point in letting Gus walk for free. no?

It's a very small sample size, but it's entirely possible that this team can make it out of the West, the team to beat would be the blues of course.

I think the can be a strong playoff team, but cup contenders I don't think so...at least not yet. Looking at our 7 defenders the hawks carry, Gus is probably top 4. So until we are knocked out of playoff contention, I just don't see the Hawks trading Gus.
