Capfriendly has deadline cap space for every team. Is this the amount of a contract that a team can add today and still be cap compliant, or the amount they can add at the deadline? Or am I off and it is something completely different?

@Banks @CapFriendly

Could you include an explanation in the CBA FAQ section? There's a LOT of misunderstanding about deadline cap space in this forum.

Deadline capspace is backwards way of calculating a teams cap space to acquire players prorated contracts at the deadline. Basically at the deadline there are roughly 42 days left in the season so the team that would say acquire them is only paying them for those last 42 days.

Ex. Hall's contract is 6M, there are about 186 days in a season so:
(6M / 186 days) * 42 Days = 1.4M
Zo if you have 1 4M in cap space now, you can acquire Hall at the deadline.

Deadline cap space is essentially the total of each day you are under the cap and not using LTIR, your extra cap space.

It is the amount of cap space the team will have with 40 days remaining in the season, assuming that their roster doesn't change, therefore they continue to accrue the same amount of cap space every day as today.

So if they have $4M free today and nothing changes, they will have $4M free at the deadline?

Not exactly, you would be closer to 16/17m at the TDL because teams can accrue cap space for deadline day by being below the cap ceiling including LTIR. So if you had 2 players who today are worth 16m and you wanted to acquire both but today you only have 4m in cap at the TDL those players will have played a majority of the season, around 75% so those players worth 16m over the season are now only worth 4m the rest of the season because there 12m of there cap hit is already counted towards the cap at beginning of the season.

@ledge_and_dairy explains if better above. The sabres could practically acquire another full roster of cap at the TDL if they wanted to. Would have to be expiring deals though because next year they would be well above the ceiling.

Maybe this can help explain it, "accrued cap space" is essentially the reverse pro-rating of contracts. Teams are given a budget of (for this season) 82.5M a year. When a player is acquired at the deadline most of their yearly cap hit is already paid and thus the acquired played is only owed them a fraction of their original cap hit for the remainder of the season (with ~40 days left you are looking at around ~20% still owed). What accrued cap space does is it works out how much cap space a team has on their budget each day and projects how much total cap a team can take on at the TDL when it is mostly paid off, then for simplicity sake it translates that back to the seasons starting cap hits so the common folk can understand how big of a cap hit they can add. (basically so you and I don't have to calculate how much a 6M prorated cap hit is at TDL it instead tells us if we could fit a 6M contract or not).

Mind you when maximizing LTIR relief you do not accrue any cap space as you are over the league set cap as LTIR contracts do count against the cap, however for the purpose of replacing players who get injured teams using LTIR have adjusted upper cap limits for roster legalization purposes
