He sucks don't do it. You're also stuck with that contract until it expires bc nobody is gonna take it unless you overpay
His buyout costs $2M regardless of when the Avs give him the boot. It doesn't increase, it doesn't decrease, so it can be washed away by a single cap increase. They wouldn't need to trade him.
However, if you claim him this season, I believe the Avalanche would be saddled with bonus overages given how specific ELC bonuses will be hit this season as well as whatever percentage of Landeskog's hit will actually be counted against the Avs cap this season. Depending on how the next offseason goes and whether or not the Avalanche want to keep Schneider into next season, those overages and next years' bonuses could start to stack and put the Avalanche into a weird spot cap-wise.
Right now he's statistically worse, but given how porous the Devils have been over the past 5 years, there's a chance he could rebound to somewhere in the ballpark of a .910sv% behind a more capable roster. He's handled a starter's load before, which is probably the most attractive part of claiming him, and getting rid of him down the road isn't difficult. If Sakic and company can find a way to maneuver around bonuses, overages, and the salary cap itself, there's really no risk to claiming him. I'm here for it.
