WPG fans is Perreault for Russell a good option

Created by: Oilyboy
Team: 2019-20 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 18, 2019
Published: Nov. 18, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Russell is still a decent bottom pair defender that can play both sides. Wpg seems to have use for that. Perreault is something the Oil need in their bottom 6. Would this work?

To quote a pretty good argument I had about this three days ago:

I'm not sure Russell would be an improvement on Poolman but yeah he's likely an improvement on Sbisa though Sbisa has played alright so far, Kulikov is hit and miss but we're used to that.. Lol..Bitetto isn't good at all and Dahlstrom was great when he played imo so they have plenty of decent depth dmen plus Niku playing well with the Moose, they're not as weak on defense as its made out to be. So is it worth it to trade a good 3rd line winger who can be moved into the top 6 if necessary for a dman that you have similar of already? I'd say it's not.

People really don't grasp how starved for offense anyone who's stuck with Lowry is, shift Copp to the center and put almost anyone else on the other wing and Perreault is likely on a 30-35 point pace instead of 24 as you've mentioned, not a huge difference but pretty typical 3rd line production. Btw Lowry is on pace for 9 points, yes it's that bad.. Lol... And people can give me Lowry's good Corsi numbers/shutdown role blah blah blah but if you play as much as he does you have to produce better then that, period.

Gawd no I don't expect a top 4 D for Perreault.. Lol
Honestly I think a 4th round pick is the best they'd get for him and I like Russell and think the value is fair but I think that Perreault is still more valuable to the Jets then Russell would be. The Jets are very thin up front, they really can't afford to deal Perreault until the season is over, Appleton and Bourque are both out for another month probably and both are downgrades on Perreault, as it stands Maurice only plays his 4th line like 6-8 minutes a night plus Little's unfortunate injury makes keeping Perreault even more necessary.

So, not really. Not without overpaying at least.

Why target Perreault? I'd rather have Russell.

Alright, I'm gonna fight you on this one again. Why? What purpose does Russell serve on this roster besides making for a decent scratch when a lineup of:

Klefbom-Larsson
Nurse-Bear
Jones-Benning

outperforms any Russell lineup on any given night? This goes beyond analytics vs eye test: keeping Russell over giving Jones proper icetime to develop into an NHL-capable defender is just lunacy.

I’d have to agree with what @MisstheWhalers said. Jets are super thin up front right now and Perreault is more valuable to us than Russell would be.

You aren't addressing my question at all, not sure why you think you're starting a fight.

Argument really.

Because just about anything in that $4M range does the Oilers back end and forward depth more good than keeping Russell for the reasons I outlined.

Meh. Perreault is old, declining and he was only a 3rd liner to begin with. And he costs more than Russell does.

250k is nothing in an $81.5M cap league. Declining sure, but again, there is more of a benefit to Perreault on this roster as an average to underwhelming 3rd line forward than Russell as a scratch.
