I honestly would not trade trotz for that package if that was allowed.

I don't blame you. Trotz has improved the defense of every team he has joined. He is tho exactly the coach the Leafs need.

I'm not even being bias - the value trotz brings to the islanders outweighs what Marner + Nylander can bring with a different coaching staff. You lose trotz, you also lose lane Lambert and Mitch Korn. Matthews on the other hand...I would trade trotz for him lol

I agree, you might have a 1st line of hyman-tavares-gauthier, but you'll win a lot more games

He is exactly what the leafs don’t need. Our team is too busy trying to play defensively and not playing to our strengths. This is exactly why Babs has to go.

At some point these players are going to have to figure out how to play in their own end, Babs or no Babs.
The ugly truth is that (especially in the playoffs) even if the Leafs spend 70% of the game in the offensive zone (and I'm being generous here to the Leafs) that still means they need to defend 30% of the time.

Run and gun hockey does not win in the playoffs.

Exactly right... so let’s stop spending 80% of games in our Dione. Start using speed to stretch teams out. This team was built for keeping teams to the outside and quick breaks. Not pounding around in our end and collapsing wingers under the hash marks

You only just addressed part of the point here. No matter how well the team plays offensively and is able to move the puck out their own end, against good teams the Leafs are going to have learn to play some adequate defense.

If the Leafs are built after the model of the Pittsburgh team that won two cups..the one thing that Pens team did was defend adequately. That is something the Leafs have not figured out yet.

Play a possession games and defend less and you will find that we defend better. Having everyone collapsed means that when we do break out we aren’t gaining the offensive zone properly it’ll at all. This leads to the other team bringing it back with numbers. I’ve noticed a lot of odd man rush goals. Eliminate that and deal with the cycle game in a way that favours outlet speed. Not everyone on the team is a Dman. That’s not 100% of the problem but it is a good start. Tweak from there.

Tonight was exactly what I was talking about. Keep it to the outside and kill them with speed. Leafs played an excellent possession game.

I understand what you're saying and it worked tonight. Against much better competition it will be harder to do that.

Btw the whole D looked good tonight.

Arizona is 2nd for goals allowed. We were patient and scored 1 each period. I think as everyone buys into the new defensive system they will get even better.
