Is Staal really that much better than Sanford? Also having a 7th defenseman like Bortuzzo is really useful in the playoffs, see 2019 St. Louis Blues.

Big no thanks. We don't need another center, let alone one who is on the sharp decline.

While I agree the Blues don't need another center, Steal isn't on that much of a decline. He's on pace for another 50+ point season, and is better than Bozak and 2/3 the price.

I wouldn't say he's better than Bozek, especially as a 3rd line center. Bozek is a 40 point guy, and points aren't everything. Bozek is better on face-offs, and at this point much better both defensively (crudely out, Staal is -14... Bozek is even) and on the forecheck (Staal is a Corsi negative and -8.4 Fenwick despite 60% offensive zone starts... Bozek starts a majority of his shifts in the D-zone, but is even Corsi & Fenwick). Plus, Bozek is way better on shootout tries.

And even if you disagree with all that, the fact that Staal makes less is entirely irrelevant. This is not an one or the other situation, we would have to pay both of them. And Staal would still eat up that extra $3M+ next season, when we need to clear space for Petro.

Yeah, that's a firm no thanks.

I'm saying no to this trade as well because it's not what they need.Make no mistake about that. But I will say this, Bozak may be even and have better advanced metrics, but he's also on a much better team than Staal. Bozak is the better shootout guy and face off guy, but one thing the Blues need plenty if right now is offense.

Right. From a wing upgrade (or young player breakout), if anything. But they don't need it at the expense of giving up more goals than they add.
