Is This Two Step an Improvement

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2019-20 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 21, 2019
Published: Nov. 21, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Wild get three younger players and a second and a third for two roster mainstays. Good idea or not? Fair trades or not?

Neither Evans nor Brook is ready for prime time; I'm just showing where they fit for next year when hopefully they will be.
Trades
1.
MIN
  1. Brook, Josh
  2. Evans, Jake
  3. 2021 2nd round pick (MTL)
2.
MIN
  1. Skjei, Brady
  2. 2020 2nd round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
The 2020 second is the pick that almost certainly will become a third as a fulfilled condition of the Adam Fox acquisition.

The Habs trade seems decent enough though a bit steep for my liking. Though given the ages of Petry and Weber I think management would prefer to keep Brook and steer you towards guys like Hillis, Olofsson (Jakob not Gustav obviously), McShane or Ikonen.

I think that's expecting too much in return for Zucker. Pull out the Rangers pick and the Wild add a 2nd or 3rd is more realistic, IMO.

I've noticed a definite downward trend in NYR fans' comments recently about Skjei, including quite a few team posts that traded him away, which is what led me to this thought.

There’s a decent chance I am viewing Skjei through my Golden Gopher fan glasses...

I think you're right on target in both trades. I'd hate to see Brodin go, though

I think that contemporaneous negotiations (if not actually simultaneous execution) on both trades would be necessary to have this strategy make sense. Trading Brodin without a replacement on the horizon is, as you imply, dangerous at best; trading for his replacement without a place to send him seems short-sighted, at worst. This "chicken-and-egg" factor makes these trades even more speculative than the usual CapFriendly ideas.

Montreal declines. I don't think Brodin is much of an upgrade over who we currently have. Especially considering how weak our defensive prospects are with an aging core.

I think that Brodin is a substantial upgrade over Chiarot (2 years older), Reilly (same age almost to the day), Kulak (only 6 months younger), or Mete. Brodin has played more games than Chiarot and any one of the other three combined and more than the other three combined, and performed better.

I would say that Brodin is an upgrade over Kulak (despite him having very good advanced numbers). Mete and Chiarot, probably not. Chiarot brings an element to the team we lack (physicality) and actually plays well alongside Weber. Mete and Petry have proven to be a dominate pairing so I don't think we should break them up either. There really isn't a spot for Brodin, only way we bring in a defensemen is either as a depth guy, or a true Elite Offensive guy.

Thank you for your insight. I will take that into consideration in the future. I was about to say that Mete appears to me to be Montreal's version of Jacob Larsson, but your advocacy of him led me to look into Mete's numbers. I'm glad I listened to you before posting.
