Description
Backstrom gets a raise but not a ludicrous one. Holtby takes below market value to play out his career in DC. The Caps kick the goalie can down the road but would probably lose a guy like Samsonov to the Expansion Draft unless they traded him first. (which I am doing in this case).

I am not saying this is the "right thing to do" it is one option out of many.

But to do this you shed Gudas after his deal expires and you have to deal one middle-tier forward.

Why would you trade Samsonov? Let Holtby go to FA and sign Samsonov to become your future starter. Then you have more cap space to maybe sign another decent player.

NSH will not use an early 2nd on a 22 year old defenseman struggling to crack the NHL - I wouldn't mind adding him just to see if playing with his bro will give him some more drive, but he just isn't good enough to give up that pick for when he is just a question mark.

Holtby is an all time great playoff goalie, and the best goalie in Capitals history. Samsonov oddly seems to have more perceived trade value on this board just based on age and a good start to this season. If GMs see it that way, then trading Samsonov for a huge offer could make sense. I'm not sure I see Dergachyov and a future 1st of a team about to spend big and get good as a huge offer, but the general idea makes sense.

Then trade a similar risk/reward player instead of a pick? Or the Caps can keep him and play him until they get a fair offer, but most teams would have called up a defenseman who scored .33 points/game the first two years of his ELC in the AHL. Dude is gonna play.

As a pens fan, this Washington goalie scenario reminds Me a lot of the fleury/Murray one a few years ago. I think as painful as it is, caps should let holtby walk and ride samsonov.

That's probably logical. But yeah, it's gotta be hard to see Fleury still stealing a few games in Vegas, and he's five years older than Holtby. I still think maybe they go crazy and trade both if they get great offers, since MacLellan signed Copley and Vanecek to three year deals last offseason. smile

Everyone is welcome an opinion. Like I said this is a possible scenario, NOT the most likely scenario. But I appreciate you sh*tting all over it without so much offering a counter solution.

Also meant to mention that...1) retaining a franchise #1 goalie at a below market rate and having a capable signed backup in Copley is not effing terrible, 2) keeping the core of the team together and while aging yet still being competitive is not effing terrible, 3) bringing along young talent like Leason, Alexeyev, and AJF is not effing terrible, 4) parting with an unknown commodity like Samsonov and an underwhelming prospect in Lucas Johansson is not effing terrible, in fact it may pan out to be smart over time for whatever return you can get, 5) staying well under the cap for flexibility, also not effing terrible, 6) stock-piling multiple picks across rounds 1-3 of three consecutive draft years would also not be effing terrible as by the time those picks developed the Caps would be saying goodbye to Ovi, Backie, Oshie, Holtby, and probably Orlov, Kempny, and Eller....

So staying competitive, keeping a Cup winning core together in a cap-constrained environment, AND developing the next generation of talent...all NOT effing terrible.
