Yeah, middle-6 NHL forward for 3rd goalie. Sure. Absolutely fair.

No they were not. Goalie that is in AHL has literally small to none value. Kerfoot for DeSmith is laughable offer lol

not talking about the offer, im talking about your analysis of a player. he is in the AHL because of Jarry. Thats not a slight against desmith, Jarry had waited a long time for his shot at the big leagues and they either had to waive him or trade him or play him. Desmith would be far less likely to be claimed due to his contract length. Desmith last year had a great numbers for a backup and the leafs dont have a single goalie in their system who can be called up rn and play as well as him as a backup so dont go around talking about how bad players are because they are in the ahl. Last time i checked your savior behind the bench is also from the AHL and has never coached a nhl game before yesterday so according to you he too has no value.

But you know I was talking about the offer. DeSmith is great backup and would be great backup option for the Leafs. He would cost a lot lot less than Kerfoot. More close to what Domingue got in a trade. Likely a 6th rounder or so. I was not saying DeSmith sucks, I was saying that you are not getting anything of a value for him. No chance. Thats literally not how NHL trades work. I would pay 5th rounder for DeSmith but nothing more. He could have been gotten on the waivers. Nobody picked him. Thats how much value he has in terms of trade option.

I dont agree, DeSmith is far better than Domingue. Teams didnt claim him because most teams dont wanna add extra contracts and not get rid of any. If a team has 48 contracts and pick someone off waivers they have 49 and they are boxing themselves in because 50 is the limit. A lot of times teams will trade a contract for a contract to stay even or do a trade to free up a contract spot and then trade. I have never understood the notion that if you pass through waivers you have zero value to other teams. Thats not how waivers work. You could easily strongarm a team desperate for a backup into trading for more value than a 6th rounder. Pens are in no rush to trade goalies but some teams are in a rush to get one. Not many teams have a backup that is cheap, reliable, and available for trade. Youre kidding yourself if you think Desmith couldnt fetch more than a 6th rounder. Thats a joke.

No thanks, pens would rather keep desmith. He has more value to the team than a 6th and Petan.

not talking about a return. I am saying DeSmith has more value than a 6th and Petan to the Penguins. Doing that trade gives the pens nothing, they have long line of NHL ready players in the minors so Petan just adds on to the pile and it diminishes our goalie depth without improving anything else on the team. Different players have different value to different teams.

Maybe a fourth, and my hatred of Petan and leafs fans that think hes worth like 4 firsts mean I'd rather trade for literally any other AHLer from TOR

Just chiming in for the value, just recently (a few seasons ago) Pit had claimed Mike condon off of waivers then moved him for a 5th to a different team in need of a temporary stop gap in net. I would see a fair value for DeSmith being somewhere between a 3rd and a 4th going to Toronto, strictly based on Torontos need for a goalie. supply and demand and such. BUT to any other team just to move one asset of surplus for a different asset I would think a 4th or 5th would do it.
