Can Muzzin and Ceci play their offsides

Created by: BCAPP
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 22, 2019
Published: Nov. 22, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
When we finally found our #1C (then a second with Tavares) we fell upon our lack of #1RD, or someone to pair with Rielly.

Ceci is unfairly maligned as he is accurately not a 1RD, and failing at that job, but he is being put in a spot where he can't succeed. The perfect complement to Rielly actually exists on the team in Muzzin, the question is can one of Rielly or Muzzin play their offside?

While I disagree with that to a degree.....Nice! Lol

Ceci just needs to be on the bottom pair, he's definitely NHL player. Just not a top one.

I know. I couldn't resist. He needs to be on the 3rd pair. I actually think his and Dermott would be alright together, but I also want to see Dermott get a lot more minutes.

This is the problem I have. I think both Holl and Ceci would excel at 17-18 minutes per night against 3rd pairing competition, either playing 20 minutes occasionally.

The problem is we have 3 LD capable of playing top 4 minutes (2 of which capable of playing top pair) but only 1 Rd (Barrie). Then we have two bottom pairing Rd.

Long term I'm all for it. Dermott is working up to it.

I think he's already close. Certainly better than Ceci I think.

Yup.

To be fair I really do think ceci is unfairly maligned. I think he is totally fine #4-5 D. The problem is both Ottawa and Toronto have tried to cast him as a top pairing d

Yeah and I think Keefe is going to eventually move him down the lineup.

Muzzin played on the right some in juniors, but never played a single game on the right in AHL/Manchester or Los Angeles.

I think you need to accept that you probably aren't going to have 2 top 4 LD, and 2 top 4 RD, and then 1 bottom pair LD, and 1 bottom pair RD.

I would just start rolling out:
Reilly - Dermott
Muzzin - Barrie
Ceci- Holl

I know Ceci is on wrong side, but I would rather him play 15 minutes as 3rd pair LD then play 20+ minutes as RD on 1st pair...

I have to be completely honest. Your profile picture is really really ugly. It kind of grosses me out too.

Muzzin can a bit but he isnt the best option. Barrie, rielly and dermott can all do it really well but ceci cant play either side. From what I've seen and heard so far it doesn't look like sides will be a huge factor anymore. In the DZ they are playing man to man so on a bunch of shifts I noticed nylander or other forwards infront of freddy where the defensemen usually play. In the OZ they are playing as a 5 man unit so everyone is cycling and moving around to prioritize puck possession. Sometimes it will be spezza or johnsson at the right point and holl for example infront of the net. It will mean that handedness will be less important, It will still mean something but not the end all be all.

I am confident that Ceci is a good NHL defenseman IF AND ONLY IF, he is put in a situation to succeed, ie as a 4th-5th defenseman playing 18-19 minutes per night against 2nd-3rd pairing opposition. He has been put out as a first pair dman for a few years by both Toronto and Ottawa and has failed...
