Johnny Hockey and Lucic - Cap Neutral Trade

Created by: CaptJosef
Team: 2019-20 Philadelphia Flyers
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 21, 2019
Published: Nov. 23, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trade is exactly cap neutral with Rubtsov in the AHL. Lucic is bought out after the season. This enables the buyout cost to be split across 3 teams (Oilers, Flames, Flyers) and also means the Flames aren't forced to protect Lucic in the expansion if he were still on their roster (and neither will the Flyers after the buyout).

While Patrick is out someone gets a callup or we play with a 22 man roster.
Trades
PHI
  1. Gaudreau, Johnny
  2. Lucic, Milan ($2,200,000 retained)
CGY
  1. Laughton, Scott
  2. Rubtsov, German
  3. Voracek, Jakub
  4. 2020 1st round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
2020 1st is top 10 protected. This gives the Flames a reasonable swing at a 11-20 slot as the Flyers look like they should be right around the cusp of playoff contention. If it's ends up top 10 then it switches to the 2021 1st.

I could see CGY being interested if that retention was smaller...

Gotta think Calgary says no because of Vorachek. He's at 8.25m for four full seasons and this season and is 30 years old now. This season he's at a 50 point pace. Is this beginning of a long term decline?

This deal doesn't improve the flames or its cap situation I think any trade for Gaudreau would be a straight prospect deal and would have to start with Morgan Frost

Calgary has some decisions to make imo, Gaudreau only has two more seasons left before free agency when he'll be 29 and realistically if they keep him for his last season it might be a distraction more then anything in what would likely be a lost season anyway.

Trading Gaudreau now would likely get a bigger return then if they wait till he's set to be a UFA and they have quite a few UFA's(Hamonic, Frolik, Brodie-if he's healthy) they could deal for futures to start the rebuild/retool.

If they were to send him east they should be looking for some younger talent coming back like Farabee or Frost not a guy like Voracek and if Philly needs to send some money back to make it work Calgary should stay away from anyone carrying a big price tag with a lot of term. Trading Gaudreau just to dump Lucic would be dumber then it was trading for Lucic in the first place.. Lol

Maybe, he could also just need to go somewhere else and reset. I think he could fit in on the Flames too. Plus the rest of the package (subtracting Lucic, adding a decent prospect and a first) adds weight.

Whenever I hear this I can't help but think how contradictory it is. Adding Frost or Farabee for Gaudreau makes the Flames worse now too. Sure in the long term it (if Frost and Farabee progress as we hope) levels out but if definitely say my offer helps the Flames more right now. I doubt there's a deal that can be made that leaves the Flames better off after moving Gaudreau in terms of his pure skill level for cap hit. Frost was a 27th overall pick, you get to draft your own Frost with the 1st rounder.

I don't think its contradictory I just think its a move that makes Calgary a worse team for sure(Giving up the best player in the deal) and still have cap problems so it would be hard to improve to become a contender so if you are trading Gaudreau for a player like Frost and a 1st or one of their young Dman you would get some Cap flexibility back to add some more depth plus a very good looking young player who looks ready to play.

I'm not saying it doesn't make sense to look for that return for Gaudreau I'm just saying that a trade based around Frost isn't improving the Flames and there isn't really any way for the Flyers to help out their cap space. In fact there's only a handful of teams that could take on that much cap and most of them are rebuilding so probably don't have the assets spare for a trade to make sense.
