Hahaha, this would be an excellent way to give TSN, Sportsnet, and essentially every talking head out there some serious "Goaltending controversy brewing!!!" ammo.

As far as retained salary that would have to be the max because of cap space also I think Dumba has 4 years left on his contract, so the Owner may be a little angry about his retained salary. I would actually be willing to give up Wilds 2nd round pick instead of Duhaime.

I disagree that Nylander's contract entitles Toronto to retention from Dubnyk's and Dumba's hits -- the Wild are taking on Ceci's egregious overpayment, too.

Why would they retain any money at all for Dumba? Dumba's on a great contract. Dubnyk would take some retention currently because of the year he's having and if I'm Toronto, I'd want nothing to do with Dubnyk at any price point unless the idea is to have a backup you can't trust cost them even more. Stalock has to be on the verge of stealing the Wild's starter gig, if he hasn't done it already.

The fact that we're now starting to dicker over retention(s) demonstrates the validity of @Paul13 's original idea. Once again, my compliments on that vision.

I guess I don't look at retained salary so much as a method to equal out value in a trade, I kind of look at it as a cost of doing business, because so many teams are up against the cap limit.

So why do it here?

Ceci + Nylander = $11.5m
Dumba + Dubnyk = $10.5m

There's no need to retain to make the money work, so Toronto is getting an extra $2m in cap space for no reason. Maybe you retain $1m on Dubnyk due to the year he's having, but retaining $1m on Dumba for 4 years isn't needed and wouldn't be done.

Well when you put the numbers right in front of me, it is hard to argue with you. You make a great point on Wild not eating any of Dumbas salary. Truth is I really would love to pair Kaprizov with Nylander next year so if the deal was this close I just want to make it happen.
