Penguins literally won a back to back cup with Ron Hainsey leading the team in ice time during the playoffs... now mind you, they played very solid team defence and everyone knew their roles, but there’s no reason that this current maple leafs D roaster isn’t capable of winning a Stanley Cup if utilized under the right coaching system.

When he is hoisting the Stanley Cup a couple of times, you have the clout to tell me how good he is. When Babcock was signed, it was as if it was the 2nd coming. Bottom line, the Leafs must improve their defence.

The Leafs lose to the Bruins in 2018, and everybody acknowledge the defence. They had about $25 million under the cap. What do they do? Sign another forward. Tavares is signed, and the “experts” have the Leafs winning the Stanley Cup. I thought at the time. Only if Tavares plays defence ... not centre but defence. The money should have been securing a #1 defenseman. I think Leafs should have made a deal to get Doughty three seasons ago. They have the assets to make that deal and the budget to sign him to $10-11 M.

I got nothing against Tavares but here is the difference ... number of rings Doughty 2 Tavares 0. You need players who have been through the trenches, who know what it takes to win.

Nobody really wishes for that.

Hypothetically it should. Don’t set your high standards for a cup. More than likely you will get disappointed. I think more than likely you would need at least 1 more Rielly class or even better class than him defenseman.

I seem to remember Letang Schultz Maatta just 3 of the other defenseman. I’d say Letang Schultz Maatta Hainsey is better than a struggling Barrie Ceci Rielly Muzzin. Unless you really are going to compare them when they aren’t doing good because of the name Rep.

Letang was injured during the 2017 run. Our D group consisted of Dumo-Hainsey, Cole-Schultz, Daley-Maatta. I agree that they are struggling this season (under babs at least) but I think the leafs D core has the potential to be very solid if players can live up to their expectations

Muzzin and Barrie are both top pair guys as well. I am not saying I am expecting the cup but if the team continues to make gains under Keefe, their talent is hard to match. This team should be so much better and I think they'll show it.
