Fixing our Blueline and Middle 6 Wing

Created by: Billy739
Team: 2019-20 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 24, 2019
Published: Nov. 24, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
MTL's had some good looks but in our losses we struggled with Toughness and Shotblocking .

Last time we went to the ECF we had 2 top 10 Shot Blockers that year in Markov and Gorges . MTL needs a reliable Veteran shot blocker who can help Fleury grow on 3rd pair while also carrying his own weight .

For me there is 1 obvious option in Kris Russel who the habs were runner up for during his UFA a few years back . He's a good puck mover even if his speeds declined. He's still a reliable mentor and shotblocker although he's overpaid . (which is ok for MTL we dont need the cap until his contract ends anyways)

There is also the option and likely who MTL's been sending all our scouts and 2 of our Assistant Gm's to see play in Alec Martinez who plays both LD and RD as a hitter/shotblocker similar to Jordie Benn's style of play .

Neither are stars we invest in long term and neither we feel bad about scratching which is key because Romanov can be he as Early as April and Harris could join him as early as Camp next summer (if not earlier depending on is he has a strong playoff )

on LW i want to try to land a Grit player who will fight but isnt defined by the role . Clifford made his name as the Grit edge part of the Clifford-Carter-Lewis line that helped spark 2 cups in 3 years for LAK . Although he was the least talented player on his 3rd line he was a contributing factor in puck recovery and cycling pucks along the boards .

i dont feel either by themselves is worth a 1st even at TDL because this year there's about 2 dozen better Defensman and LW's that are pending UFA's .

The Offer to LAK for that reason is going to be a Quality Prospect (A- or B+) , 1st round pick in 2020 and a top AHL player like Hudon ,Barber ,Leiskanen or Vedejmo

With Clifford , Martinez and Granlund The Habs become a tougher more balanced team that will only get stronger with Drouin's returns . As far as losing a first we'll make a deal at the draft for one using our 2nd and whomever failed us in the playoffs
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Clifford, Kyle
  2. Martinez, Alec
Additional Details:
Clifford's a UFA who will likely re-sign back with LAK in the Summer if they want him . Cliffords a reliable option for his role but he'll get more money in free agency then MTL will payout.

Martinez is the main piece LAK is giving up that they wont have the option to get back but if he does re-sign with MTL then LAK recieves an additional 2nd round pick in 2021
LAK
  1. Hudon, Charles
  2. Ylönen, Jesse [Reserve List]
  3. 2020 1st round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
unprotected 1st round pick in 2020 or 2021 (LAK decide Draft Day)
2.
MTL
  1. Granlund, Markus
Additional Details:
MTL gets a speedy back checker who forces a fair amount of tunrovers for the Cousins-Thompson line .

both players are on about the same level so just do straight up 1 for 1
EDM
  1. Kulak, Brett ($550,000 retained)
Additional Details:
EDM gets a depth D signed at a low cap of 1.3m for the next 3 years which is a great option for a cap strapped team with injury issues yearly with their LD Core .

Edmonton says no. on the left side our depth looks like:
Klefboom
Nurse
Russell

Manning, Laggesson, Jones

Broberg and Samorunkov

You can get granlund for a 6th or 7th round pick or waivers

Basically you want to trade Hudon, Ylonen and a 1st for 2 season of Martinez and 1 season of Clifford? I'd rather take that 1st round pick (Draft looks deep this year) and hope Ylonen pans out...

Only flaw in your idea about the Kings trade is that with the 2020 draft actually in Montreal, I don't think that they're trading their first-rounder for anything less than an earth-shaking deal. But we'll be happy to take the unprotected 2021 first.

Maybe you guys want to keep Russell playing because of his contract, but Kulak would easily be Edmonton's 3rd pairing defensemen. He's able to jump into the rush but also stay back and defend. His hockey sense is pretty high, so he would be a great 2 way guy in Edmonton. But Montreal rejects, so no point in even debating it.

Montreal rejects 1st trade. They aren't going to give up quality pieces for a defensemen on the wrong side of 30 and a 4th liner who would struggle in Montreal's playstyle.

I think Russell is undervalued and don't think there's a big enough difference for Kulak to push Russell out. Kulak might be better but I don't think enough for the Oilers to do this

Montreal rejects so there's no point in arguing.

i mentioned this in the final line of the description
due to players i added and those to come there will be limited jobs next year so whomever fails will be sold at the TDL

Ex:

Petry or Tatar
even if they only pick up a few points losing favor in MTL there will be a lot of teams willing to give up a 1st round pick for them .

either way if its MTL's pick or one we trade for i dont expect it to be a top 20 pick
i'm hoping for a playoff run

its the 2.15m cap they'll save that would motivate a cap strapped team .

they need cap to add players because every year they fail to while Mcdavid has career highs CM gets bitter
They've really failed him since he committed to them with Term and need to step up

this isnt suppose to be an upgrade for you its for MTL as the only motivating factor in taking on EDM Cap
this is suppose to save EDM money without leaving a hole in their D minutes wise

Fair enough. But in that case they can just trade Russell at the draft and then let Jones or Laggesson step in, maybe Bouchard if he's ready
