being unable to put the puck in the net is what chased him out of pittsburgh. Plenty of opportunity, no ability to finish. He's miss wide open nets. It was embarrassing.
He's getting older to and that speed is starting to disappear. The only saving grace on that contract is it's under 3 million.

He’s a solid defensive player. He’s great to pair with a defensively unreliable player but him and Panik on the same line is terrible. Doesn’t help Burakovsky is absolutely on fire. I called it before the season started that he was gojng to have a killer year. Can’t believe they let him go for Panik

But hasn't Burakovsky been playing on the 1st line due to injury?

Yeah, I watched the "solid defensive player" thing with the penguins. And that's great and all, but he's of no help to put points on the board. And this is an offensive game. At the end of the day, if you can't do anything with the puck, you most likely aren't going to be put on lines with people who can. There is just too much pressure to score. Hags use to be a better player than he is now. I think it's a combination of several things. Injury and age being the top 2. It wouldn't matter who his line mates are. He couldn't net goals with Malkin as his center and you aren't going to get on a top line with 20 points a year. It simply doesn't work that way. More is expected.

1st powerplay not 1st line but I’m not entirely sure. Either what he’s on pace for 75points. Panik is on pace for 7. Rumor was Burakovsky was promised a top 6 role when avs traded for him.

I don’t mind him. We need guys to help make out pk better. That being said we used Connolly money to pay him and that’s just stupid considering how good Connolly is

you can find solid PK guys at 1 mil and under 3rd and 4th liners who are younger, faster, and some frankly having more scoring touch.
He's been hurt a lot, this is his 3rd in 4 years looks like he's going to miss a good chuck of time. All started with breaking his ankle and frankly the play has never been the same since that.
He had issues with it healing. He never got surgery as far as I know. But I do know he never came back the same player of what he was.

A big part of why Burakovsky is doing so well now is because of the opportunity he's getting. He's been playing with Mackinnon lately, and been getting a lot more minutes than he was with the Caps. It was clear that he wasn't going to work out here. If we held onto him, we'd have the same Burakovsky we've had the last two years. Moving on was the right decision.

Remember that time I suggested the Caps give Burakovsky a change of scenes by trading him for a contract holdout that Leafs fans wanted to get rid of?

He's outscoring Nylander again this year. smile

Pretty funny that no team outbid Colorado's 2nd and a 3rd offer. Any team could have had Burakovsky for a 1st last summer.

Except the Caps are #1 in the NHL currently, and don't need Connolly or Bura. We got a fair return for Bura, he wasn't a fit here. Perhaps we could have kept Connolly and not signed Panik and Hagelin, but then our defense would suffer for it. Which was the problem the last 2+ seasons to begin with. Gigantic hot blobs in front of the net every game, our goalies having to stand on their heads and us having to score a lot of goals to win.

Now we seem a more sound 5v5 team, controlling play better and having more solid defense.

I think with the progression of Vrana and Wilson, along with Ovi maintaining Ovi and Oshie playing well, our offense hasn't really dropped off, despite missing some bottom 6 scoring. While our overall team defense has improved.

I don't think replacing Connolly and Bura with Panik and Hagelin wasn't predicated on replacing offense. The biggest weakness this team had last season was the penalty kill and overall defensive play. Let's look at this year and last year:

2018 (full season):

Goals per game: 3.34
Goals Against per game: 3.02
Penalty Kill %: 78.9%
Team Save %: 90.41%

2019:

Goals per game: 3.52
Goals Against per game: 2.92
Penalty Kill %: 83.1%
Team Save %: 90.71%

IMO, I'd take 2019's stats over 2018's.

Both players have also been injuired and most of the offense has come from the top 6. With the development of Vrana mix with those two guys our goals per game would be much higher and the defensive numbers aren’t much better imo

They aren't much better, but the trend so far is more sustainable than last season. The Caps were hemorrhaging high danger chances against last season, and that's what did the team in. There's still pieces to that are lingering, but the Caps are still the highest scoring team in the league, so I'm not too concerned there.

Also Bura was getting paid like a top 6 forward, not a bottom 6 forward. Yet he was producing like a bottom 6 here. I don't lament losing him, even if he's producing better elsewhere, because in all likelihood, he was never going to produce that here. Not while we have Ovi, Oshie, Vrana and Wilson taking the top 6 winger spots.

Connolly would be nice to insert back into the third line without a doubt, but with the Cap situation as it is, we're already struggling. We'd have to give up Hagelin and Panik for Connolly, and again, he was never going to be in the top 6 if everyone is healthy and his production wouldn't change much. Except he would cost us more than double what he was costing us before. He was so valuable to us because he was getting paid like a 4th liner here. He's no longer getting paid like that.

Wait. The team giving up one less goal per ten games, I get. The team scoring two more goals per ten games? That's pretty cool.

Also, the PK is up from 24th last year to 11th, although before Pangelin got hurt, they were up as high as 6th.

Both Bura and Con have been playing top 6 time. And I'm sure Caps would have much much rather kept both of those guys but they priced themselves out WSH.
