Its been too long without a superstar

Description
Montreal has gone years without a true superstar upfront. It's so boring to hear year after year, we don't have that star player who can take over. It's time to change that.

Tanking for Alexis Lafreniere should be the only thing on Marc Bergevin's agenda for the rest of the season. He is touted as the best prospect since McDavid was drafted in 2015. Lafreniere would be the perfect player for the Habs. He is a 6'1" stealth/skill winger who can make plays at an elite level. Don't forget that he's from Quebec and the draft is in Montreal. No big deal, right?

You can’t get young superstars via trade. Yes, everyone will say Gretzky got traded but how often do you see trades like that? Look at the young superstars in the game today. McDavid, Eichel, Dahlin, MacKinnon, Marner, Draisaitl, Matthews, Makar, Rantanen, Heiskanen, Laine, Barkov, Hischier, etc. They were all acquired with high picks. You can only get young superstars through the draft.

In order to get Lafreniere, we’d have to be bad enough to get the 1st overall pick. The Habs as currently constructed are in no man's land. Not good enough to be a contender, but not bad enough to be a bottom feeder. They must sell key veteran players in order to fall out of playoff contention. They could then give more prominent roles to young players like Kotkaniemi and Suzuki.

We could keep Weber and Petry for veteran leadership. We would keep players like Gallagher, Domi and Drouin as they are still young. The Habs could have a young group of Lafreniere, Kotkaniemi, Caufield, Suzuki, Romanov, Drouin, Domi, Gallagher, Poehling, Fleury and Primeau.

It may not be fun in the short-term but Habs fans will appreciate this move long-term when we are contenders year after year.

I'm 100% behind that idea! Except I'd really keep Danault and trade Petry instead

Detroit is rebuilding so that 3rd is more valuable than Reilly from Detroit's point of view. Who was Montreal's last superstar?

The Reilly and Kulak trades were more just to get them off the roster. They could be traded for 5th round picks.

I was talking about offensive superstars. The last player to have over 82 points for the Habs was Kovalev in 2008. That’s unacceptable.

At the TDL to a team looking to add depth could easily get a 3rd.

Well for one, only throwing away Danault and Tatar for picks probably still has MTL being a bubble team. Habs can still internally replace those guys. So you'd have to ship out at least over half of the Habs core to realistically start tanking.

Not to mention the draft lottery is a crap shoot. When the highest possible odds at winning the lottery is 20%, Not great odds. Last year COL (*cough* OTT's pick *cough*) had the best odds and they end up picking 4th overall.

Could you imagine giving up on an entire season, letting go of half your core players, all for an 80% failure rate... and end up picking 4th overall...

You sound like Bergevin. We need to take risks and go in a clear direction.

Lol I'm all for taking risks! Just not stupid ones...

You say clear direction. If you tank for Lafreniere, and fail to get him (80% chance at best of happening), what's the direction then?

Still won't be a superstar in sight...

Give me Cale Makar for throwing the season... I do it in a heartbeat. 4th overall isn't exactly a bad spot to pick.

Makar ain't too shabby lol solid pick. I think what the guy who made this thread is referring to is a forward superstar, and very specifically targeting Lafreniere. Tanking doesn't work that way. BUF went all in for McJesus, and I mean ALL IN . I t was made very public they wanted him specifically (who can blame them)

tenor.gif?itemid=5683250

They didn't get him.

They still managed to snag Eichel, again not too shabby lol but he ain't no McJesus.

I would think you'd have to move Price. Without him you're no doubt a lottery team. He might keep you afloat a little more than you'd like. Problem is finding a trade partner for him.

Except if Bergevin did this, he would lose his job. I doubt Molson is ready to commit to a full on rebuild so it wouldn't happen.
