What I think the Leafs thing could be about

Description
Clearly the Blues think Kostin isn’t ready and Kyrou needs more time and that’s fine, I’m all for Kostin spending most of this year in the AHL. That being said, playoff teams don’t have Bozak and Barbashev in their top-6 and a fourth line that includes a healthy scratch on Detroit and a PTO. With the Blues scouting Toronto pretty heavily, I’m lead to believe Johnsson or Kapanen would be the main target. Johnsson is a great fit and adds the puck-skill and finish that the Blues lack with Blais and Tarasenko out long term. I’d think the return would be either Bortuzzo/Barbashev (or both) + a 2nd round pick. The Bortuzzo suspension probably interferes, but Barbashev would make sense as he’s a physical bottom-6 guy. He’s also been on the 2nd line lately and hasn’t deserved it so maybe it’s a showcase.

Toronto doesn't have a capable LW to replace Johnsson. If they're trading a winger I think it's Kapanen.

Except I doubt we'd want him.

IMO the Leafs have adequate wingers to replace Johnsson (yea not as well) But they don't have guys like Bortuzzo and he signed for two full more years. Your suggestion of Bortuzzo, and Barbashev and maybe a bit more for Johnsson, yea that might be a good fit for both team.

I’d be okay with either. I prefer AJ, but I do think Kapanen has quite a bit more potential. There’s a lot of raw talent, he could just use a good coach to figure out how to harness that talent.

I think Armstrong was looking at TO as a possible seller prior to Keefe taking over. Now that the team looks like a completely different squad than it did under Babs, I think that was all old news. TO is swinging back in the right direction, I'd wager Dubas is going to wait for more assessment from Keefe before any changes are made.

Actually during the losing streak, 6 games and then the two victories, Kapanen might have been the Leafs best forward.

That’s sorta what I’m saying. The tools like his skating and shot are excellent, if he could just figure out some of the simple but high skilled plays that create offense I really do think he could be a dynamic player.

Heh. It wasn't my trade idea. Personally, I would not make the trade listed above.

The Leafs are all in on the speed/skill mantra, especially with Keefe on board. No matter how much outside sources say they need more grit, Kyle Dubas doesn't buy it. He's not going to trade a speedy winger like Johnsson or Kapanen for a goon like Bortuzzo

Sure it’s trendy to suggest Bortuzzo is an awful player who’s just a goon because he crosses the line, but his on ice results the past 3 seasons have been very very good. Pair him with a puck-mover like Dermott and boom you’ve got a third pair that can break up cycles and get the puck up ice for 15 minutes a game.

I don't want to say he's a bad player, but he doesn't fit the Leafs ideology right now.

Kapanen would be harder to replace than Johnsson. It have to be for a physical defensive defensemen, seeing as that’s Leafs biggest need.

The soup man was playing on the Tavares line with Marner out and has looked great. When Marner comes back, reunite Hyman-AM34-Nylander. Johnsson is expendable
