Maybe he can have the "c" for a game and see how it goes...

They are both UFAs in the summer of 2025. I say neither are Leafs for the 2025/6 season. Odds are the next captain isn't even on the team, maybe not even in the Leaf organization. Connor McDavid is a good a choice as any.

I think Marner will be the next captain of the Leafs after Taveres. He has tremendous leadership skills for such a young player if you listen to him talk in interviews with the media. He also seems to have a very special relationship with the Leafs fan base and all his teammates and the fact that he is from Toronto and grew up idolizing the Leafs as a kid would make it a great story if he became the next Leaf captain. Also, contrary to media reports, Marner had no interest in leaving the Leafs to sign an offer sheet this summer as he only wants to play hockey in Toronto.

There isn’t really a reason to assume that Marner will be on the leafs longer than Tavares.

Thanks for that! Amazingly, even without that awesome insight, i knew that. They both come to UFA at the same time. Pretty tough to look that far into the future.

You know how the Leafs operate. Six years from now Marner will be 28 when Tavares is gone. Then the Leafs wait the usual eight years or whatever to select a captain, so Marner will be 36 years of age. No won't be Marner
