Habs and Ducks - looking to the future

Created by: RoadRunner72
Team: 2019-20 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 27, 2019
Published: Nov. 28, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Not necessarily a reaction to last night Bruins game. But let's assume Habs continue to slip down the standings, and Toronto/Tampa/Florida pass them by.
Assuming Price continues average play, so they are doomed for this year. They decide closer to trade deadline to look a couple of years out, when guys like Romanov, Poehling, Kotka, and Caufield are contributing.
Anaheim might be willing partner in a big deal, as they have some very good pieces still in place (Gibson, D-men, Getzlaf, etc.) for a deep run again in the next couple years. Petry could help their offense, and stabilize the right side top 4 defense. Lekhonen adds some middle 6 secondary scoring and great defensive ability.
Montreal takes a bit of a step backward to gain some very good futures. I know that the Price/Weber window is basically now, but there is just no way this team can compete at the top level consistently. They are at least 2 years away from the necessary balance and depth
Assuming Habs end up with 2 first round picks between 8 and 15 next summer, they take Justin Barron (RHD) and Dylan Holloway (LW). The lineup shown roughly simulates a depth chart after 2020 draft - the scratches would likely not be back in fall 2020

Its not that the value is horribly off, its that the team you chose to make the trade with is wrong. Petry would be moved to a contender looking to make a serious push, not a low end fringe team that knows their success in their youth and draft picks.

I think that the basic premise of your trade (Petry to the Ducks for youth and futures) deserves more consideration than the first four commenters gave it.

I'm going to assume for purposes of this discussion that Petry is and remains a #1 or #2 pairing RD for the balance of his contract. (Objections to that premise raise an entirely different issue.)

The fact that the Ducks are "rebuilding" doesn't preclude their wanting to reach the playoffs this year. If Anaheim beats Winnipeg at home on Friday, the Kings beat the Sharks in San Jose on Friday, and Vancouver loses its next game (an admittedly unlikely but not impossible parlay), the Ducks would be in third place in the Pacific Division when all 8 teams in the Pacific Division have played exactly 27 games (i.e., one third of the season). My point is that Anaheim is not that far away. Adding Jeff Petry (the sooner the better) would significantly improve Anaheim's chances of getting there. When Josh Manson returns from the IR, the Ducks would have a backcourt of Lindholm-Manson, Fowler-Petry and Larsson/Guhle/Mahura-Gudbranson. It is not unreasonable to think that defense might lift Anaheim to 1.33 points per game over the last 42 (56 pts total), which would guarantee them a spot in the Stanley Cup tourney.

Now let's consider the trade itself. I think Lehkonen and Shore are more or less equals, so the basic structure is Petry for Comtois and the picks. With the signing of Brayden Tracey today, Anaheim has Jones and Tracey competing with Max Comtois for a future top-6 LW position, and Isac Lundestrom can also play LW. So Comtois is not essential to Anaheim's future plans, and there's no assurance he will beat out two of those three players. But the first AND the second seem a little rich for me. I would do Petry alone (Anaheim doesn't need Lehkonen) for Comtois, Shore and the second (could even be this year's) or Comtois and an unconditional 2021 first (and maybe a little bit extra). Finally, I note that although Petry is only signed through 2021, that means he wouldn't have to be protected in the expansion draft.

In short, I think that this is a better trade than the others have given you credit for.

See my reply to the original post, above.

The "rebuilding" of the forwards can be considered pretty far along, with Steel, Jones, and Terry already up, Lundestrom, Groulx and now Tracey all signed, and Zegras in the pipeline. Attention now turns to the defense, which is also already pretty well developed on the left side with Guhle, Larsson and Mahura all getting playing time and experience this year and this past June's picks LaCombe and Thrun already drafted. So the main issue is RD. Which is better: the player or players Anaheim will draft this year, who probably won't be ready until 2021-2022, or Jeff Petry for the next season and a half?

Add Jeff Petry to this team now and they become a serious contender for a playoff spot even without Josh Manson until the halfway point: Lindholm-Larsson, Fowler-Petry, Guhle/Mahura-Gudbranson, with Del Zotto and Holzer in reserve, isn't a bad defense for the time being. As pointed out in my other reply, I agree with you that the two picks are a little too much, but the basic idea here is pretty good.
