Was Geno A Generational Talent

Created by: AnalyticsGeek

Description
I think yesterday, Evgeni Malkin reminded us what a great player he was. I have seen people compare Geno with William Nylander, Anze Kopitar, Nicklas Backstrom and other players. These comparisons need to stop! With all due respect to the other players (they are undoubtedly elite), Geno was a top 3 forward in the league from 2008-2018. A superstar. His production, stats, awards and skill level proved it. He may not be a top player any longer, but how quickly we forget about him. I don't want to call him a generational talent, but he was as close to it as could be.

There have been 3 generational talents to come out of the 2000s decade, and they are Crosby, Ovi, and Geno. Period. Its those 3 in their own tier and then everyone else below them. Those 3 are the greatest players of the modern era hands down and this obviously excludes McDavid because he too is a generational talent but is not part of the same generation as those 3.

If we are going on technicalities then he still hasnt officially retired smile but i meant players drafted in the 2000s not played into the 2000s because then you could include Lemiuex too

I would rank generations by age group, Jagr was born in 1972 so he was part of the 90s era. That was when he was at his peak. What about Patrick Kane?

In my opinion Kane is a franchise player. He is phenomenal but I just feel he isnt on the same tier as the other 3. HOWEVER, if you made an argument for him being a generational talent i would not try to refute it because you can make a very legit case for it. Its just my opinion but just because its mine doesnt mean its true smile

I do believe that Geno was a little bit better than Kane, although it's very much debatable. However, Geno is 14th all time in points per game whereas Kane is 49th.

I think the problem with geno is the perception right or wrong that he doesn't always show up, where the guy whos playing next to him in syd is joe hustle every shift. the guy can play but he goes down in history as second banana to Crosby despite the fact that hes so talented. Now if he was say drafted somewhere else and was the #1 guy in another franchise people might look at him differently. Yeah I think he deserves mention up there with ovi and Crosby for this generation of players but it just doesn't seem to happem.

Well, Geno will never get the same recognition as Sid or Ovie because they're just a little bit better than him. However, I definitely think that Geno is above someone like Nylander.

If we are going to have an honest conversation about generational talent, then I think Chara is the most over looked generational talent in the whole NHL.
