I can live with that. And with the Leafs cap situation maybe that's all they can do. Besides the Leafs have already the best trade possible this season. Keefe for Babcock.

I think you could Hyman moved at some point. He's definitely a Babcock type player and Keefe may not have as much use for him. It will be interesting to see who moves where when Marner comes back.

I like Hyman, and he brings a bit of toughness and grit that everyone tells us our team lacks, but it seems like you have 10 or 11 forwards (depending on how you feel about Spezza and Petan) for those top 9 spots. Can Hyman bring you more then say, a Korshkov can in a callup from the AHL?

If Hyman moves what do the Leafs get for him? Either cap relief or try to get back another d-man for the stretch run at a retained salary. I bet Mike Green at 50% retained would be a nice addition beside Muzzin.

Not that he will be able to and it wouldnt be easy but Dubas is pretty good at asset management. i could see anyone who is going to be a ufa getting moved for 7rd picks or slightly younger rfa's

I have no clue why people are always trading Hyman. He is the hardest worker on this team and it isn't even close. Hyman is the least of this teams problems.

It's really silly talk saying Hyman can only play for Babcock. Hyman can play for any team in the league. And trading him doesn't bring much cap relief as he cap hit is only 2.25m.
Green, is on LTIR and really isn't that good any more, except as the RHD on the PP, which the Leafs don't need

Hyman is, in my opinion, the teams best PK forward. If they want to improve in that department they need more guys like him, not less.

It's hard not to like what Hyman brings. 20 goal 40 point forechecker pk guy who never slows down. I especially like the look of him on his strong side with JT and Mikheyev. Im hoping they keep that line together. It gives the leafs a new look with a line that can cycle and could also be a legitimate match up line.

I was thinking the same thing.
If I'm Keefe I'd be tempted to try one of Nylander or Marner on the left when Marner comes back and put Matthews in the middle of them. Keep the JT match-up line together, had the youngsters as a potent scoring line, and bounce Johnsson down the lineup to help with depth scoring. Worst case scenario it doesn't work and you try something else

Yep. I'd love to see that.

Nylander/ AM/Marner
Mikheyev/ JT/Hyman
Johnson/ Kerfoot/ Kap
Moore/Engval/Spezza (sorry Goat.. the Giraffe looks better)

With the style that Keefe is playing the Babcock rule of a grinder/shooter/passer isn't relevant. I think Nylander/AM/Mitch could play catch all day in the ozone. Besides, JT has made a career out of playing with less skilled wingers. And he seems like the kinda guy who'd be open to pulling an Yzerman and changing his role for the benefit of the team.

Regardless, it's just nice to know that there's lots of options moving forward and things aren't so rigid now.

Toronto has to make a trade, and it's a trade for defense.
It's not about this year either it's about next.
They will have 2 to possibly 3 defense men and that's a very weak 3 defense men on roster at the end of the year.
Dermott will resign and probably get paid a lot more than what he's making. I'm guessing 3-4 million range and Liljen will come in and play 3rd pairing. Even though I don't think he's ready. They don't really have a choice to.
But given their cap space, all the other positions they have to fill. I mean they got 8 forwards, 1 defense man, and 1 goalie and only have roughly 18 million in cap space to work with.
If you pay Dermott 3 you are down to 15. if you pay the 5 forwards 4 million in total (which probably isn't going to happen) you are down to 11. You pay a backup goalie roughly 1 you are to 10 million. A AHL back up defense man you are down to just above 9. Liljen you are 8.5 roughly?
you got to sign 3 NHL caliber defense men for 8.5. Good luck with that on the open market. You will end up with garbage worse that the defense is now.
They should be trading for defense this year. Even if it means moving some of their current guys out. They need cheap with term who can play.
If you can package a deal with a forward to clear cap space great.
But this team has no choice but to look into a trade or two by deadline.

Or they just deal with it in the offseason. That's generally when the style and kind of trade you are describing would happen

It's a good thing I didn't say he can only play for Babcock then. I said Keefe may not find as much use for him. Considering his use under Babcock was first line winger, I'm not sure I made a huge jump in logic.

HIs salary would save them enough for a minor blueline upgrade. Green was just an example who would be easy to get, not saying he's a slam dunk. Anybody they can get for what they have to spend/will be willing to give up is not going to be a stud, he'll be a part.

not really. A. they could use the defensive upgrade now, not later.
B. it's much harder to trade for defense in the off season than it is to now. Teams have cap space open, they are more willing to deal to acquire what they need etc..
And teams that know they can't get help on the open market start looking through trade driving prices up. Right now you can find defensive help on the cheaper end.
People are willing to make moves to help get under the cap if need be and to clear space for next year.
Now is one of the best times of the year to buy on defense. You can find a good deal.
