Leafs trade two NHLer for one,,,,which doesn't make them better this year. No way Minni trades a backup with a nice three year contract for THAT.

Oh I don't know about negative value. Ceci's isn't a Norris candidate, but he's better than most give him credit IMO. BUT, CHI still wouldn't do this trade. The trade doesn't help the Hawks for the future and Murphy is on a good contract for 2.5 years more. They're better off keeping him...and trying to get a 2nd Murphy to be honest.

Interesting, but I would pass. Murphy’s value (especially to Chicago) is much higher. If Toronto wants to deal with Chicago for a defenseman they should consider Gustafsson.

Think about it though; Ceci is a 3rd pairing on most teams and given his $4.5M contract that is a lot...like $2M too much. That said, add to it if Chicago is selling they are prepping for the future, Ceci is under contract for only this season. Plus, Seabs isn't going anywhere and the Hawks have mitchell and boqvist coming up next season. As such, Ceci adds zero value and his cap hit, even only for this season, is a negative...that's why I say Ceci is a negative..

Or do Kap for Murphy which is more interesting to Chicago.

What about a re-trade? Eat half that pending UFA cap...there's someone buying that. 7th dmen have got 3rd rounders recently.

It's possible but when valuing a trade, you have to look at the value of the players to each team not necessarily what you can flip a player for to another team...that's a much harder proposition. I don't think Ceci is worth more then a 4th given his contract and the teams looking to acquire him would be playoff teams with not much cap space and looking to add depth. So that said, let's say he's worth a 4th. Well Murphy is still worth more then Johnsson and a 4th IMO and McCoshen is worth a 5th. It's still out of balance. Murphy and McCoshen for Kap and Ceci is more equal iMO.

Nobody is calling Murphy a God and nobody saying Ceci is trash.

Generalizations and using extremes is what too many people do on here. The debate is Murphy is worth a fair amount more then Ceci doesn't mean one is trash and one is a God. We aren't comparing Brent Burns to Branden Manning. However, the difference and debate here is what a very solid #3 guy is over a #4 or very solid #5 guy is worth. There is clear value differences between a 2nd liner and 3rd liner just as there is between a 1st liner and 2nd liner. The lower down the lineup, the more players available so it's exponential the value as you move up the lineup.

I don't know about "God". I've also been saying (on this post) Ceci is better than people think and he get a worse wrap than due, but Murphy has been very solid. It's arguable he's been the Hawks best Dman. BUT...we're about to find out real soon. Keith's out with a groin injury...I think his 1st or 2nd game missed in like 4 years.

To be fair Stalock is more of an NHLer than Hutch. I'm not saying any of these three teams would make these trades though.

How is Murphy anything more than a complimentary #4/5 dman? I view Ceci in the same boat. Both are relied upon to step up higher in the lineup than they should, but in reality, neither are worth a ton. If Ceci is maybe worth a 4th because of his contract I don't see how Murphy is worth much at all.

You haven't paid close enough attention to Murphy then and that's okay but he's definitely better then a #5...nobody that knows him well would say he's a #5. He's a solid #3/#4 on a strong team and a #2 on a defenisvely weak team like the Leafs. Murphy is better then De Haan to put it in context and guessing you are more familiar with de haan. De Haan is worth more then Ceci. Ceci is valued more as a Maatta type of player. Role player. Murphy is not a role player.

Ceci is not a good player. I've watched almost every game he's played from the OHL onward. My hopes were high when OTT drafted him and every season I thought something would click for him and it just never did. Even at $3M he'd be overpaid. His hit should be $2 - $2.5 at the very most. Yes, he comes with loads of experience, but when experience does not translate to improvement what does it matter? I'll be very interested to see what his next offer is. If it's anywhere near what he's making this year then I guess it's not just Ceci who has trouble learning from past mistakes.
