Bottom-Six Trade Brewing

Created by: netminder71
Team: 2019-20 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 2, 2019
Published: Dec. 2, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Rumor that the Caps are moving a depth forward to make room to bring Hagelin off LTIR and bring up a 7th D.

Heard from a Capitals insider last night and just now an RMNB article confirms the body involved but not the "transaction."

- Boyd has played well since call up
- Panik has finally scored a couple times
- Dowd is better than Stephenson
- Leipsic's speed/tenacity is hard to throw away
Trades
WSH
  1. 2021 5th round pick (VGK)
VGK
  1. Stephenson, Chandler
Additional Details:
Updated from WPG to VGK.

Insider told me the trading party would be: 1) not in the East, 2) has cap space, 3) dealing with lack of depth / some injuries, 4) a middle/late pick or reserve list player as compensation

Updated from projected 4th rounder to 5th rounder

On a worse team, Stephenson is a middle-six utility forward. He can skate with the puck, or skate back to check superstars. He's won a Cup. If the asking price is a 4th, most teams should be pretty excited to add his skillset.

In terms of a team that hits and plays defense all up and down the lineup, Stephenson is a better fit than skill guys like Leipsic and Boyd, but in terms of just putting together a team that fits under the salary cap, Stephenson is a more logical move. Too bad.

If the picks offered aren't great, I wouldn't be surprised if they look to add back an RHD prospect instead.

Seems like a good fit for a speedy, defensively sound guy who can carry the puck a tiny bit, too.

edit: 4th seem good, or are there any RHD with lower cap hits than Stephenson that could be worked out?

2nd edit: Ryan McLeod for Chandler Stephenson?

Yeah, I can see that too...Vancouver, Edmonton, Minnesota, Winnipeg are my top 4 targets for this...Vancouver has less cap space, Edmonton / WPG more flexibility

Lucky for us, Stephenson's trade value is as high as it'll ever get right now. Which *maybe* can net us a 4th round pick, maybe.

As a Jets fan I wouldn't mind this, I remember Stephenson from the Caps cup run as the kind of guy you need on your 4th line if you're gonna capture a cup and he's a pretty strong skater if I remember correctly.
Stephenson would allow the Jets to utilize their 4th line for more then 6 minutes a game, for something like a 4th round pick or later it's depth worth adding if his cap hit can be fit in.
