Could always pick him up while Marner is ltir play him a game or 2 and waive him after or move Hyman, Johansson, Kapenen or Kerfoot

This and...if he couldn't be a good backup in Montreal, why would that change in Toronto?

I agree but also despite popular belief, Montreal is far worse defensively than TO is.
