Would VGK Do This For Deangelo at TDL

Created by: rja

Initial Creation Date: Nov. 27, 2019
Published: Dec. 2, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Since they are playing each other tonight, I figured I would pose the question. I will probably re-post this from time to time so that I get more responses.

This obviously assumes that when the deal is done, VGK are confident they will make the playoffs, and that they will be able to re-sign Deangelo (they would have his rights and should have enough cap space).

Holden was put in for VGK cap flexibility; could be Merrill if that is preferred (both are pending UFAs).

I think Deangelo to Vegas makes so much sense on so many levels. Great personality for the market and fills the need at RHD for VGK.

I like Deangelo, but is he realistically worth a 1st and a 2nd? Maybe if he still had a year left on his ELC at the reduced rate, but he's going to get a fairly hefty raise next summer.

I mean 19 points in 25 games on a team like the rangers should be considered impressive. VGK will have his rights and they have neither a solid offensive defenseman, nor a right-handed shot defenseman outside of Engelland and who knows if he'll be back next season. This way they have their RHD locked up for at least 3 years (probably more). It's a late first rounder this year, and then a late second rounder next year. The swapping picks was too afford VGK additional cap space to take on Holden. I think because VGK have so many picks, this could be worth it for them.

I agree that Vegas would be interested in picking up a player like Deangelo, I just don't think they'd pay that much for him. If they really wanted an upgrade at 2RD, I could see them possibly giving up a 1st, but not the 2nd. I just can't see them giving up a haul like that for a guy that wouldn't be playing on the top pair.

Offensive D isn't really out problem - we already have Schmidt and Theodore for that. DeAngelo would help our team out, but not enough that we'd be justified sending a 1st round pick the other way just to get him. If I'm looking to improve Vegas D, I'm looking at a top-4 defensive player to complement Schmidt/Theo.

If I recall correctly, Schmidt plays the right side though left handed, so you would need to complement either Theodore or McNabb. I think Mcnabb's stay at home style would work really well with Deangelo. And again, he's on pace for approx 65 points; that could warrant a first rounder + for a right-handed shot defenseman, which are hard to come by in this league. I think with the tons of picks Vegas has over the next couple of drafts, it's really not a huge price for a top 4 dman that could/should be there long term.

Schmidt does play right-hand side left handed, and right now is paired with McNabb. Theo is paired with Hague on the right side as well at the moment, but would work really well with a stay-at-home player. Apart from that, you have Merrill, Engelland, and Holden, of which only Engelland is really considered a stay-at-home player and is honestly not good. Again, if we're looking to grab a defenseman, we're looking for a stay-at-home player. Other teams would be willing to pay a 1st round pick for him, but probably not Vegas.
