Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 3, 2019
Published: Dec. 3, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I rewatched the leafs and bruins highlights from last year. Personally I think we should go out and get one guy who would fit into our system and wouldn’t cost us much. The leafs need a defensive minded guy who can play with mo and I wanna make a trade with the jackets for savard. The leafs one tough guy forward and one stay at home dman and I think we could play well in the playoffs with that.

Thoughts?

Depending on the prospects potential, I’d probably make the trade.

He’s 20 years old. He lead the whl in scoring for dmen last year. He’s has the potential to be a pp specialist and he could be a second paring d man.

I thoroughly don't understand this logic in the Leafs community that 1 'tough guy' forward is going to solve our team toughness issue. I 100% agree that the Leafs need to be meaner, tougher, harder to play against physically and that they need to stand up for teammates. I just think that all of that comes from the team as a whole stepping up. Look back to the Chicago game this year Toews dropped the gloves to make a statement and stand up for his team is Toews the type of 'tough guy' player we should be acquiring...no he doesn't fit that mould (He's probably more like JT) but he stood up for his teammate regardless.

I just think that the logic is flawed to think that one 'tough guy' forward who will play on our 4th line, so 10mins a night MAX under the Keefe system, is going to miraculously make the Leafs tougher to play against.

Teams like Boston are tough to play against, in the way we're talking about, because everyone up and down the lineup is willing to push hard and play physical. Not because they have 1 out of 12 forwards who is a 'tough guy'.

Don't know why the Rangers make that trade. Lemieux might be a better NHLer than Moore. The CBJ trade is really 1.5m years of Savard for Johnsson.

I know a lot of the TV talking heads said last year that Toronto's toughness improvement needed to come from inside. The Boston guys haven't been "tough" their whole career, they had to learn to play that way. Matthews has a big frame, he needs to get more comfortable throwing it around (imagine he started playing a bit more like JT), Marner needs to get a bit of Marchand to his game (minus the cheap shots) and work on his forecheck. Nylander is never going to be a big bodycheck guy, but can improve his strength on the puck and ability to go and get it. Reilly needs to get better at battling in the corners. Those are the things that will make the Leafs tougher, I 100% agree about not adding some 3rd pair D or 4th line player to add "sandpaper."

If they wanted to do that just bring up Mason Marchment when he's healthy for nothing.

Everything you're saying makes perfect sense. I think particularly in Keefe's system where that 'sandpaper' guy will probably play 7-9mins a night - what're you doing for the other 50mins?
