Kapanen to Oilers

Created by: Trickster
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 3, 2019
Published: Dec. 3, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Before jump the gun here, let's discuss this

Here the Oilers D I that I see for 2020-2021 :

Klefbom
Nurse
Jones
Larsson
Bouchard
Russell
Benning

So is Bear moveable? I think so.

Kapanen would probably be 30+ goal scorer on the Oilers playing next to McDavid or Draisaitl.

Leafs would need permission from Oilers to see if poolparty will play for Leafs/Marlies.

Yes I overpaid Hamonic in purpose to ensure he comes here.

You overpaid Hamonic!

Also ik that this is 1/3 salary retention but make PIT retain salary on DeSmith ($550 001) and I do that salary so you can do illegal

(use a calculator: 1250000-550000)

Ken Holland doesn't even trade Bear at gunpoint. Oilers easily decline.

A top-4, puck moving defender on his ELC will not be moved when a team is in the midst of securing a playoff berth for the second time in 14 years. Frig right off into the sun.

Edmonton traded Hall just to get a sniff at what they thought Bear's playertype was. Do you expect them to give one up so handily?

To get some O power next to McDavid and Draisaitl? Yes.

Not for a third line forward.

Would you trade Sandin or Lillypad for a similar return? Because that's what you're doing here. It's a horrible trade even before considering you want the Oilers to add Puljujarvi.

What about Larsson? I know you haven't had a large sample size this year but he seems to me to be a defensive minded, hitting RHD without an offensive game. I have read mixed reviews on him so being on the East Coast of Canada I am normally sleeping when Edm plays. Would he be in play for feisty, forward offense depth like Johnsson or Kerfoot?

This trade does not make much sense from an Oilers perspective. I don't think that trade makes them better overall.

Sign me up for the Pittsburgh trade if that is ever on the table.

Absolutely, but it's a trade I'd explore in the summer. The mixed reviews are correct, but he still offers positive utility for a run this summer.

Gross overpayment for a backup whose contract can't even be buried and is signed for 3 years.

Larsson this year had negative value.
And 4.1 million is too much of cap hit for what he provides.

Even with retention, I'd pass.

I do not think Bear has Sandin or Liljergen value.
This is likely a bias for thinking more of your prospects then another teams.

When I look at Bear right now, this might be his first full year in the NHL so that is why I dont want to hedge all my bets on him.

He was 5th round pick and not highly touted where Sandin and Liljergen ate 1st rounders

who cares if he was a 5th rounder? it's how he is playing right now and it is pretty darn good for the Oilers

Are you saying it is out of the realm of possibility that a NHL player completely falls off after 1 good year in the NHL?
If you are, then you have not watched hockey in the NHL long enough.

I see value in Bear, dont get me wrong.

This warms the cockles of my heart. I had numerous trades this summer proposing to trade Bear for Kapanen and Leafs fans were chirping me really hard saying how much better Kapanen is than Bear. Now the shoe is on the other foot.

But yeah, a fast, puck-moving, tough 1RHD or 2RHD like Bear who is RFA is worth way more than a winger any day of the week.

I would love for the Oilers to get Kapanen because the Oilers need 1 more top 6 winger on a reasonable contract like his. But the ask is waaayyy too high.
