Discussion on our Prospects

Description
In the trade with Anaheim, I’ve included who I think are the Islanders top 10 prospects. I really only follow the NHL, so this list is mainly based off reputation/standard numbers, so take it with a grain of salt.

I have two questions for Islanders fans:
1. Do you agree with this list? Anyone too high? Too low?

2. Who would you trade to get some NHL pieces who can help now? I’ll answer this question myself in the comments.

Note: I’m not including Bardreau or Ho-Sang, the former because he’s not really a prospect and the latter because he’s never going to play another game in the organization and has no trade value on his own.

From what I’ve read here, Sorokin and Dobson are your untouchables.

List seems reasonably accurate though.

As for trades: I wouldn’t be upset with moving Aho or Bellows. Aho had a great year in the AHL last year and is off to a decent start this year, while Bellows has upside but hasn’t been able to put it together in the AHL yet. Maybe a change of scenery is needed for him.

Otherwise, I’ve suggested using Wilde as part of a Taylor Hall trade, but that’s about the only available trade target I’d move him for.

Yes, I meant to have in there but must’ve forgotten, thank you.

He’d be between Ishakov and Bellows perhaps

He’s our goalie of the future, no doubt, but you never really know how KHL guys are gonna work out until they’re here. Dobson and Wahlstrom are potentially both top line players and Dobson especially has looked excellent in his limited playing time.

I think you can put the top 3 in any order and consider them untouchable. Then Holmstrom and Wilde should only be traded for a prime acquisition. Everyone else, including Aho, is expendable.

Aho is in the same position toews was for a long time - he deserves to be playing in the NHL.

Goalies are really hard to predict, as an Isles fan we hope he is everything he is projected he could be. But, he still hasn't played in NA so who knows, he may end up being average.

I would add Koivula as untouchable as well, not that he is an A level prospect but only C prospect right now.

Yes, but he's expendable. With Pelech and Toews on that side, who plays #3 isn't really important if Aho can be part of a package with a little more punch.

I did too early last year when he was struggling in college. However, he's having a good start to his professional career and already got an NHL call up. He looked pretty good in his limited time up here, despite playing in the bottom-6. I'm fairly confident he's going to be a stud

I would use their strength to work their needs...
Use Colorado as the example. Last season, they had a great 1st line but, were limited after that. What did they do? They used their strength, (their D depth) and picks to add Kadri and Burakowsky along with UFA Domskoi. They still have amazing, young assets and have improved their team immensely.

The islanders have great D depth. Current players, young players, they all can't fit. IMO, the best thing they can do is use that depth and turn it into current help, (top 6 winger or 3rd line C)
Pulock, Dobson, Wilde and Mayfield cannot all play on the right side in the NHL. They have to make a determination of who they're going to use and who will be expendable and use that to add.
I think one of the best things management can do for this roster is show them they believe in them. Spending some future to make their current season roster better goes a long way with players confidence.

I agree. I’d personally start by looking at our defensemen. Like I said in my comment, guys like Aho and maybe even Wilde should be expendable if the right offer comes around. I just can’t picture all of them on the same blueline

Yes.
The left side has Leddy - Toews - Pelech. With Hickey - Aho - Wotherspoon - Vande Somple in the AHL.
Right side - Boychuk - Pulock - Mayfield - Dobson with Wilde - Hutton - Queinville in the AHL.
That's not even talking about players not in pro hockey (Balduc)
They need to make a decision on who stays in the organization and who can be traded for other needs. The lack of Centers is crazy. The lack of top end wings is not good. I am not sure what Bellows has done to warrant healthy scratches and 4th line min in AHL but that is never good for a player thought to be a top end player.
