Pens fans do you think Jarry is the future in Pittsburgh

Created by: Zwui21

Description
Buth Jarry and Murray are RFA at the end of this season. After winning the Cup and signing his extension, Murray has never been a great goalie. Mostly underperforming and getting injuried.
Do you thik Jarry could become a cost controlled starter for the Pens in the future?

As a Habs fan, i reallly don't know, but resigning him would probably take $5-6M+

It's all about what happens this year. We are primed for another tough decision come expansion draft time and it may be best to put our eggs in one basket prior to that and get some value out of whatever goalie we decide to move. I have no doubt that Murray is a great goalie, but Jarry was always supposed to be Fleury's successor and then Murray came out of nowhere playing well and rode that into back to back cup wins. I'd go 50/50 split for the rest of the year, ride the hottest goalie into the potential playoffs, and see who comes out on top.

GMJR already has the expansion plan ready with DeSmith. I believe that's why he got a 3 year deal to be sure they would have one goalie to have available. After this year I believe they will sign Murray to a 4-6 year deal worth around 5.5-6.5 mill. mostly dependent on how the rest of the season goes. Jarry will get a 1 year deal similar to DeSmiths, from there they would wait until after the expansion draft to decide on Jarry or DeSmith so they only have one of those two eligible for expansion. From what I've seen Murray plays better with fewer games and some competition. Last year when DeSmith got more starts and played will Murray miraculously started playing better something like 0.940 save % after Christmas to finish the year at 0.920 which is slightly above average for starting goalies (he was 10th in the league last year). If Jarry plays the same I would expect Murray to turn it around and play better.

thank you for this great analysis!!!! Murray should not be playing close to 70 games. thats exactly why he struggled so much last season early on. Pens will give more starts to Jarry and Murray will improve dramatically to end the season.

What happens when one of Murray, Jarry, or DeSmith is put on waivers for the start of next season, and is most likely taken? They would have to carry all 3 goalies on the main roster for the entire 20-21 season in order to have your plan go into effect. Trade one of them "now" and sign some junk UFA goalie over this summer that would qualify for exposure the following summer.

(however, other than under contract for 20-21, I can not find any other requirements for the exposed goalies)

I think the only goalie requirements are to have at least one exposed that is under contract. My anticipation was for PIT to play the expansion game similar to what they did last time and pay a price to guarantee that Seattle takes a certain player. I think PIT will try to pay Seattle to take JJ or Hornqvist contracts and they might be willing to pay Jarry or DeSmith plus to do so. The current contract situation is more of a back up plan to only risk exposing one of Jarry or DeSmith if Seattle doesn't want to play along. buy hey that why I get paid the big bucks to play around on armchair gms!

But what I am saying is that one of Murray, Jarry, DeSmith will not be here past 10/1/19, much less make it to the expansion draft in June 2020. Therefore there is no "expansion plan" for these three goalies.

This is nonsense.

1st the expansion draft will be used to dump Hornqvist.
You can just mark that down as the day he's no longer a penguin.
As for Murray, when he's on he's lights out. He starts slow. But once he gets going he's one of the hardest in the league to beat. Last year at the end of the year he was far and away a top goalie in the NHL.
Jarry is just getting his feet wet. He was a 2nd round pick, which is high for a goalie, for a reason. He is a solid player. But the penguins aren't just going to move on from Murray like that.
If anything they will ride 2 streaky goalies and trade out DeSmith who was the goalie of the month in the AHL.
