Honestly I’m not so sure that they do. Makar plays the more important position and has been ridiculously good so far. Point per game as a rookie d man? That’s unheard of. In fact, I don’t think there’s any chance Colorado takes this.

this is of course assuming makar maintains the pace he has kept up. This is definitely a controversial deal that would probably leave one team wishing they never did it. I don't know that either team does this, but makar is very good.

I agree. Makar is 2nd in scoring for defenseman and is solid defensively. Matthews is good but hardly top 5 center or top 10 player. He’s also grossly overpaid and has little term to warrant that overpayment. Guys like Matthews come around every 2-3 years guys like Makar are far more rare

Wait
Now I realize
if they got Matthews, they would have to move down one member of their first line or play matthews 2nd line

It's a hard sell that Makar plays the more important position, it's really just not a need for Col, they have 0 interest in moving Makar and the Leafs would have to pay Makar 20 mill per cause you know he'd be a leaf

they'd probably split it up into duos- like Mack and Rantanen and Matthews and landeskog or something like that. Also would probably move kadri for a d or a winger
