Description
The Leafs are tied for 24th in the NHL in points percentage. This team is ungood. Its time to sell the UFAs (not Ceci because he's not really worth much) and hand it over to the kids (Sandin, L'il Tim etc) or let guys like Harpur and Schmaltz finish the year while the youngsters keep developing.

How is Barrie worth than much? Certainly the Isles don't need him. Even Muzzin could be an overpay. I don't disagree with your "sell", but by any recent comparables, I wouldn't expect such good return to the Leafs,

Johnsson and Anderson are the same age, so I'm not sure what that trade accomplishes.

Rutherford doesn't even say no before hanging up.

DeSmith, Addison, 1st -for- Muzzin, Hutchinson, 3rd

Toronto ends up with probably the three highest value pieces in this trade.

Pens counter with DeSmith, Riikola, Bjugstad (cap purposes) -for- Muzzin, Gauthier, 3rd

Not sure how Toronto trades two pending UFA defensmen and not only get t better players that are cost controlled but 1st round picks also. Neither Muzzin or Barrie get that kind of return

Pitt says take a hike. Do you think Muzzin is going to win the Norris cause that return says he should be a Norris candidate.

Yup. Time to sell.

The Leafs accelerated the rebuild when they said they would have patience. Even worse is the acceleration happened when they added 2 high priced veteran UFA forwards when defence was the weakness. One was traded in a package with a 1st round pick. The other is still here.

They also paid the young stars top dollar even though Toronto is one of the best franchises to play hockey for...possibly in the world...with the huge resources available to the players and opportunity.

I am in my 50s now and my 2 boys are in their 20s. I wasn't born when the Leafs won their last Cup. 2 years ago I thought the Leafs were going to win a Cup before 2022 but now I don't see it at all. Neither do my boys. I am now enjoying young grand children so maybe they will see a Leaf's Cup win.

What are you saying? Every trade needs to make the team younger or it's pointless?

Backup goalies shouldn't be overvalued, they aren't worth a ton. Addison might have a future but his production has plateaued, makes me wonder if he'll ever have a future in the NHL. Two uninspiring pieces mean the Leafs get to trade up 2 rounds in the draft while giving them an AHL goalie to replace DeSmith..... you know, the guy that's about to cost management 2.75M over the next 2 seasons while playing in the AHL. Moving him is as much a business move as a hockey move.
Maybe I am asking too much, just want to point out why I see it this way

Addison is 19 years old, only two things have plateaued: nothing, and not that either.
The Pens have the "problem" of having 3 goalies that belong in the NHL. $1.25M for that injury insurance is not even a drop in the bucket.

Muzzin isn't trash, at all, but he is 30, a UFA, lefty, and getting less time than Ceci (other side, I know). He would be nice to have, but not nice enough to overpay for.
Even with DeSmith going out in your trade, the Pens have enough goalies in the system and have ZERO need/use for broken 29yo Hutchinson.

My counter (which only came up as a counter, not something that I considered uniquely)
DeSmith - Toronto need, purpose of the whole trade
Riikola - D out to offset D coming in
Bjugstad - Cap purposes
-for-
Muzzin - Short term Pens need due to injuries
Gauthier - F out to offset F in
3rd - Honestly, just because you had it there

So a depth defender, an overpaid 3C and a backup goalie for a Top 4 defender and a 3rd round pick.
My assessment might be off but so is yours

The Islanders have 7 defensemen on the main roster plus at least two more nhl caliber D in the minors why in the hell would they need Barry?

I'm not saying anything, but you talked about "handing it over to the kids" in your description. Plus, ya know, Johnsson is a much more consistent performer than Anderson. So this trade would not make you younger or better. I don't see the allure.

I state the kids I'm talking about in the post as well
The allure for Anderson is two fold. First, Johnsson is a waste of space on this roster. He's another fly weight winger that doesn't serve a role that can't be filled by somebody else. Anderson bring a level of size and pugilism that the Leafs sorely need and also has the potential to return to 30-40pt form. Good guy to add IMO

Because Barrie is better than at least 5 of them?

First of all no he’s not and he doesn’t fit the system. Second of all why would we trade our most valuable asset for him? We need a forward, preferably a third line center. Your thinking makes no sense

Depends on how much Toronto wants DeSmith. Muzzin isn't going to be in Pittsburgh after this season so all the Pens would end up with is the 3rd (past the rental value). I hesitate calling Muzzin "top-4" as he is only in the top-4 because he is in Toronto. As I mentioned, Ceci is getting more time then Muzzin is and Ceci is certainly not "top-4".

So it is solidifying your goaltending (plus stuff) for a rental to solidify D during injuries (plus stuff)
Nothing groundbreaking going either way, and certainly no 1sts or high prospects.

If you don't think Muzzin is a top 4 defender then you simply haven't watched him enough. He's a 2nd pair guy through and through. Ceci gets more minutes because he's Riellys partner and he plays PK1, not because he's better.
Last I checked GMs still pay a good price for rental defenders. The fact that he won't be on the Pens next year doesn't mean much really. GMJR is a guy that swings often and usually for the fences so paying for what could be one of the best LD rentals out there seems like a no brainer to me.
Also no, it's not worth selling Muzzin for a backup goalie. Backups can be had for much less than that.

Okay, then get your goalie elsewhere.

Note that not a single response to this AGM was positive. Every one of your deals are very far skewed for the Leafs. Consider that.

I already have.
Notice how I didn't defend anything very much? Simply stated why I thought the way I did and ended my very first response to you with "maybe I am asking too much, just want to point out why I see it this way"
From there this conversation was sidetracked and we talked about your counter..... which you haven't acknowledged as being too far skewed in the Pens favour wink

I haven't because it is not a trade that I really want either. I don't really want Muzzin so to me the deal needs to be skewed to the Pens to make it worth doing, to make it "even". I am okay with even my counter not happening.
