the best goalie trade atm

Initial Creation Date: Dec. 7, 2019

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
TOR
  1. Stalock, Alex
Additional Details:
Kahkonen has proved he is here to stay beyond this year. Once dubnyk is back, it seems logical Stalock will be moved. He's drastically cheaper than Georgiev and has pretty similar stats. Seems like a no brainer deal.
MIN
  1. Greenway, James [Reserve List]
  2. 2020 6th round pick (TOR)

They’d rather move Dubnyk honestly.

Not sure 2 games really proves much. He was average for 2 years in the AHL.

But sure. Accepted.

I see Jake Allen on the right side of that chart. I know he's been decent this year - but still can't used advanced stats to prove every point.

Both subject goalies are on the left. Minnesota has a pretty decent looking defense, but are missing two regulars in Spurgeon and Pateryn to injury. I'd say both of them (NYR and MIN) have similar defense cores.

Still, this trade is much cheaper in value than parting with a 2nd + for Georgiev, not to mention you'd be paying him between 1.5-2.25M depending on the term to his next contract. I don't think toronto is prepared to do that given the money they need to put into their defense. If Stalock is marginally worse but only costs 85k more than your current backup, is that not already an improvement?

I hope my argument is at least reasonably logical. I'm not saying that Stalock is better than Georgiev, but I think given the cost to keep him and the cost to trade for him, Stalock seems like a much better option.

I mean, I just wouldn't use assets to acquire a goalie who is going to let in more goals than would be expected. Considering this is the leafs, who will have a high xGA to begin with, that is a waste of resources.

You're looking for general improvement. I think anything at this point improves on Hutchinson as a backup. Stalock is a pretty low risk trade that - even if he doesn't perform "as expected", is still decent enough to get SOME wins for the team.
If Georgiev was signed to Stalock's contract I'd be all over it - I just know that the situation to get a decent defense core is hard enough as it is, nevermind investing 1.50-2.25 into a backup goalie.
Eli liked this.

Can they just go out and sign a goalie of "expected" skill right now? Seems like a good idea... How do they find one?

Not saying it is easy, just saying we should devote resources to getting good players, not just better than current.

Agreed, Stalock isn't going to solve their backup problem. He'd be playing behind a worse defense so how exactly do people expect that to turn out? You'll be in the same situation, but now you'd have 1 more goalie under contract making it harder to go out and acquire one who will get the job done.

From Minnesota's side, Kahkonen hasn't proven anything. He's played 2 NHL games. Once Dubnyk is back, Kahkonen will head back to Iowa and focus on the AHL playoff push. Maybe he gets a look next year at backing up Dubnyk, but there is literally no reason to rush his development at this point when they have Dubnyk and Stalock under contract beyond this season. The return in this trade doesn't exactly entice them to change course either.
