Mitch Marner vs Cole Caufield

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 8, 2019
Published: Dec. 8, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Since the Caufield vs Lafreniere debate was extremely lopsided, let us compare Caufield to another winger. These are two different types of players, however are both projected to be top wingers in the Connor McDavid/Alexis Lafreniere era. Who do you guys think is more talented/has the higher ceiling?

Well so far it’s clearly marner but it’s not a fair comparison. You should probably go with another prospect.

if you want an ideal Caufield comparison, try to pick someone with Caufield's size (DeBrincat, Brink, Perfetti, Gallagher, Gaudreau, Zuccarello, Gionta, Spurgeon, Byron Sheary etc.) Although I wouldn't compare Caufield to players like St Louis, Dionne, H. Richard, Cournoyer)

I don’t know if this is a joke, or satire, or whatever else. Imagine if Caufield became a bust at the NHL level lmao.

Well, I’m not asking who the better player is, but rather who’s the bigger talent?

Thanks for the suggestion but I think Caufield will better than all the guys you mentioned. I think he should be compared to goal scorers like Rocket, Brett Hull, Bobby Hull, Ovechkin and Bossy.

Like I said, marner hands down. Marner was the better junior player at centre and is now NHL proven winger. I think the absolute ceiling for Caufield would be like another small winger. DeBrincat. That to me would be the better comparison.

he's an nhl tested 94 point winger. Caufield will at best be the next debrincat, which is still pretty darn good

He isn’t... that’s the point. I mean the kid put up 14 points in 4 games in the memorial cup.

Caufield to me has High potential to be a bust (doesn’t mean a bad player) much like I predicted of Hughes. Everyone thought he would be the next Mcdavid or Matthews. I predicted his game wouldn’t translate well and he would have an average rookie season. I still see him developing into a great player but falling short of elite. To me caufield falls into that same category. He certainly could surprise me and come out with a debrincat type of performance.

unfair comparison. one guy hasn't even signed an elc, while the other is coming off a 94 point season. way to early to tell. but i doubt caufield ever scores a 100 points unless he's playing with a marner or an aho type play maker

Well, you’ve gotta think Caufield has higher potential than DeBrincat. The guy’s shot alone makes him a more prolific player.

you've gotta keep in mind at the nhl level a shot can't make you a fixture as an elite star. Ovechkin, hull, etc did so much more than just shoot. When Laine came into the league, he was skating and doing things other than shoot, and now look at how the past couple seasons have gone as he has solely relied on his shot. Laine has as good or better shot than Matthews, for example, but Matthews is better and scores more at the nhl level because of all around smarts and game

Well you have a point. These are small guys who lack the physical element to be dominant players and they mostly rely on their skating and puck handling. I don’t think there were many people who thought Hughes would be better than Matthews or Lafreniere. It’s hard to see Caufield develop into a better player than Hughes.

You’re right about Ovechkin, he’s a really skilled and explosive player with the puck and can generate scoring chances on his own. However, Brett Hull was a one dimensional player. He just relied on his shot and positioning to find space to put the puck in consistently. He wasn’t a great skater, nor was he fast or skillful. He had to rely on guys like Oates, Modano and Datsyuk to create for him. Yet he’s considered an elite player, was he not? Remember he was like a 6Th Round pick.

slow down. I wouldn't put Caufield the same category as Rocket, Ovy, Hulls, and Bossy. Phil Kessel, the previous record-holder of the goals in the US U18 Program is not even close to those goal-scoring machines you mentioned.

1) he wasn't exactly slow, had nice hands, big body and obviously the killer shot
2) even if he did rely on his shot back then, times have changed. Guys who only shoot and don't do anything else, and have great success, virtually don't exist anymore
