why wouldn't you just re-up Deangelo?

Because he's due to get a big raise in pay the way he's been scoring and other prospects might soon be ready to become the 3rd line RD. Trouba and Fox have pushed DeAngelo to the 3rd line RD. But if the Rangers keep winning, I'm starting to think they'll keep DeAngelo (and Strome - for that matter) and give them both the big increase in salary they deserve. From the list of players above, I'd say Kreider gets traded and maybe McKegg and Haley. I'd only expect a 7th round pick for Haley and McKegg, so if NYR keeps winning and stays in the playoff race, maybe Gorton doesn't trade them for a 7th round pick. The same could be said for Kreider... If no team offers a 1st round pick for Kreider, maybe NYR doesn't trade him and instead just lets him walk on July 1st?

I think DeAngelo has to go as well. It'll be interesting to see if it's at the deadline or at the draft (although if it's at the draft it probably comes with an extension). With the buyout penalty for Shattenkirk at 6mil next year, I just don't think the Rangers can afford him. He will want a big raise considering he just signed a one year contract for less then a mil after last year. He can also nab them a good pick and/or prospect, so I think he makes a lot of sense. I'd love to see Toronto pick him in a package with Georgiev.

I think to sign him they need to buyout Brendan Smith, and they already have to balance lots of buyouts. IMO easier to just have Smith on your 3rd pair (or the AHL) for one more year and move on from DeAngelo.
