No need for MTL there, Cole Caufield is their best prospect and Pietro is another RD and we have Weber and Petry, MTL easily pass

As a Blues fan, this is stupid. First of all, no way in H-E double hockey sticks does Montreal trade Caufield for anything much less a 30 year old defenseman as well as a solid young defenseman in Fleury.

Even if Montreal needed a RHD, the value is no where close. A 30 YO UFA defensemen is worth a lot less.

While Pietrangelo could be a game changer for the Habs, is this a rental deal, or is there some sort of assumption the Habs can sign him to an extension? That's a heck of a lot to give up for a rental.

They’d sign him to an extension

They could always make him an offer on July 1st if he's still unsigned. No need to overpay at the deadline, especially since MTL is still a top six Forward away from being serious contenders. I also firmly believe that CC is untouchable at this point.

It would make more sense to trade him rather than to let him walk for nothing in FA

This is only true for teams that don't make the playoffs/won't get out of the 1st round.

If the Blues are legit cup contenders (IMO they are) I think they would be happy to have Pieterangelo for a long cup run and let him walk then to trade him and be weaker for it

Agreed, plus even if the Blues wanted to trade him at the TDL he has a full NTC and I doubt he'd want to go anywhere other than a true contender. Can sign with anyone in the summer, why go to (what I expect to be) a playoff bubble team like MTL?

Yeah, he is. No clue how you've convinced yourself otherwise. Besides, Petro wasn't the only important defenseman you are aiming to deal away for futures.

I think they're gonna ride it out through the playoffs. They are, after all, the defending Cup champs. No way they repeat w/o their top D.
