Why would the Islanders trade a piece of their team for Draft Picks and an AHL player?

Because they need to make room for Dobson and Wilde... The return is arguable, but it doesn't change the fact that they need to make room for those guys.

Seems like a trade in the off season may suit the islanders better. Can’t have too much depth for the playoffs.

They do not need to move Mayfield at all, and definitely not within season. The Isles could try to move Boychuck or Leddy and go with 4RD, Wilde has at least another year before he is ready. So again, why would the Isles move Mayfield who is on a great contract and they do not need to move, for pieces that do not help the roster today?

Cause it all about the Leafs and their wants/needs, not about the other teams......like the Isles, Ducks, and Sabres.
