Buffalo D

Created by: ek_65
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 9, 2019
Published: Dec. 9, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Buffalo has a surplus of RHD on decent contracts with some term or RFA rights.

What offer would you pull if you're Dubas? Not sure on value, some may need to add for the Leafs for sure.

1. Ristolainen is probably the biggest name, he has struggled being the number 1 guy in Buffalo but can be a really good top 4 guy with Reilly or Muzzin. Not a bad cap hit only has 2 years left until UFA though.

2. Montour- simple defenseman, arbitration could lead the leafs in trouble if not signed with term.

3. Miller- really shined in Vegas but may not be want the leafs need but much better than Ceci. He has some term on an ok cap hit, would probably need to pay more than Buffalo paid to get him in the summer though.

Sabres wouldn't trade Montour for anything less than nylander.

Risto would probably go for kapanen and liljegren with Buffalo adding just a little.

Didn't know Montour had such high trade value, was moved for an A/B prospect and a first last year. Must be having a really good year.

Why are people trading only close-to-NHL-ready right shot Dman developed by Leafs that is only 20 years of age and already dominating the AHL with giant minutes under his belt? I dont get it.

I like the miller trade.

The whole problem is that Toronto is a rival in the division. We will not want to help them, they will not want to help us. Montour is definitely not for Kapanen. I doubt that Dubas will be interested in Risto, given that he constantly uses analytics. I wouldn’t do is trade Miller for this package, because he really can play well, which everyone was convinced of yesterday. So far, Bracco has not shown himself at all in the NHL and it is not known whether he can be good at this level, and picks are doing nothing for us now, and there is a good chance that we will just help Toronto in this deal if Miller will be good.

I think his task was to get rid of Zaitsev’s terrible contract, but how could he trade him otherwise?

Offcourse you like the miller trade because leafs clearly win. Bracco has little to no value. He would like to be top 10 prospect for sabres. Also, Miller trade could never work because of cap issue. It would have to be kapanen or johnsson for miller.

Id do Johnsson for Miller too. I think he might be the best fit out of those 3 (Joki is not going anywhere and Borgen same story).

Your Montour deal is fine. I would say BUF would add the pick not TOR. Money in and money out, and Montour needs a new contract after this season anyways and Kapanen is under contract. Us Sabres fans always over-value our players, and we just acquired Montour at the end of last year so I can see why fans would be quick to jump on you. But Sabres need forwards and they need to offload D so something has to give.

is he really dominating the AHL though? I don't watch any of the games but he only has 11 points in 21 games. Tied for 40th among dmen

Yes he is. Defensively sound, great transitional player, makes very intelligent and great plays in his own zone and plays most minutes each game (25+ mostly), He is not offensive defenseman so offensively he would not be top notch, but defensively he made himself great with hard work and dedication (was his weak attribute when drafted tbh). Plays top pairing minutes for second or third year now as extremely young Dman. Thats special.

"Buffalo has a surplus of RHD on decent contracts with some term or RFA rights." Well they have four....certainly not a surplus especially if they trade one away. Miller ain't that decent and would hate to that iffy contract long term.
Gotta think the Leafs are quite happy going into next summer with cap space and then the ability to trade cap space for Dman. Certainly Ceci hasn't been worse than some of the other Leaf Dmen.
Jets have their own cap issues which can't cleared until the status of Byfuglien is clarified.
