This would be nice but I think the Blues keep him for their own run.

A) the Leafs are too far from a playoff position to consider going "all in"

B) it's not enough. Hell cost the ol' 1st, prospect and young player. So liljegren and Johnsson. But where's the first

I’d argue that if Pietrangelo became available he’d be worth more than Hall and Hall is expected to get that type of package.

This is already an overpay for old man petro. Blues aren’t trading him and leafs don’t want him.

Massive overpay for the Leafs for rental. No team would give so much. Really think Pietrangelo is the difference so the Leafs get a Cup this year.

TMLSage you should know better. Have some respect for a players NMC...especially the captain of the defending Cup champs.

For one more month. Sure he would be a great addition this year. But what is his next contract going to look like?

So leafs rent Petro for 3 roster players a prospect they need next year with two draft choices all while battling for a wild card spot.

Also Tavares just turned 29 and was signed when he was 27. Signing a player 3 years older to a massive long term contract would be a mistake. There is a different landscape in the nhl. Younger players are getting paid early and looking to hit ufa as soon as possible.

Petro will want a minimum of 6 x 9m and will be steadily declining through those years.

Depends how you define overpay. All payments for rental UFAs are basixally overpays but that's the market

Teams are willing to overpay because another team has paid 2/3 of the players salary. Unfortunately this does not apply to the leafs as they are using ltir.

When was the last Captain traded at TDL who was moved for 3 roster players and 6 pieces in total from a team that is leading their division and defending SC champs?

I’m going to go with never. The blues are keeping Petro in my opinion and the leafs should not try to pry.

I was just responding to you calling it an overpay.

If he were to be traded I think the return is higher than above.

Do I think it makes sense for the leafs? Absolutely not. But I do think the market for elite pending UFAs is always expensive.

Do you think it makes sense for any team to give away

1st,1st,2nd,3rd,3rd,4th and a 5th for a rental. (My evaluation of the pieces). No. A 1st a prospect and a roster player is the going rate.

I don't think it's ever worth it to go for a rental unless you have a window about to close and a specific problem that can be solved.

Otherwise every team but one who pays for a rental is wrong. The vast majority of trades for rentals aren't worth it.

It's rare one player in the NHL makes a significant difference unless it fixes a big problem.

I actually think Pietrangelo is the missing piece for the Leafs to win the Cup. Just letting you know I am hearing where there is smoke there is fire so this might not be a crazy as you think. I gave alot of people the heads up on Babcock and they just laughed at me so I am totally good with your comments.

The only smoke about Pietrangelo coming to the Leafs is the stuff being smoked by some Leafs fans and posting about on CapFriendly. Blues aren't asking their captain for a trade, and certainly Pietrangelo isn't leaving his home, St Louis, mid season. I'd talked about the Leafs disrespect for Babcock and his poor coaching since 2018. Took Shanahan a long time to own up to his mistake of hiring Babcock, or at least keeping him more than two seasons.

You might be right but one has to wonder if Blues are prepared to let Pietrangelo walk as a UFA at end of season for nothing when realistically they will not win another cup with their current roster. Also the fact that the Blues acquired Justin Faulk maybe showing the team's uncerntainity of resigning Pietrangelo. Pietrangelo is from Toronto and has played with Tavres with Team Canada in the past so I think he would be very comfortable comming to Toronto.

You're right the Faulk signing just might mean the Blues may not think they have the cap to sign Pietrangelo in the summer. But they doesn't mean they should or even can trade Pietro this season. Teams lose about 3 UFA from their roster every year. Teams in playoff contention usually don't trade their UFAs, it's poor teams that trade UFAs for futures. Pietrangelo has been looked as the Blues "rental". And while the Leafs might be one of the preferred destinations for Pietro next summer, his wife and three kids are all St Louis based, so I don't figure Pietrangelo has any motivation to waive his NTC this season. The Blues seem to have as good as chance to go the Cup final as any Western Conference team. You can't say the Leafs are even money to win a first round this season (again)
