That’s what conditions are for, like Vancouver and Toronto did with their 1st their year

Like the idea of targeting Woods. Don't think it would cost JP though.

100% agree with not trading the 1st. I argue that every time I see someone trading it away, especially for a rental. Praying that this year isn't a one off, this is the first year of the oilers contention window. Drafting a high skilled guy in the first rounder who is not only exempt from expansion, but can potentially play a big role for you in 3-5 years, when other guys need to get paid and you lose some guys to free agency.

Despite being one of the top teams in the West, I don't think there is any rational people that see them making a real threat to win the cup. I see this year as more of a building year. Short of anything extreme like getting Taylor Hall, the oilers aren't a couple minor additions from going to the finals. 97 and 29 carry the team. All cup winners for as long as I can remember are incredibly deep. Oilers are the opposite of deep. And even an active day at the trade deadline can't make up for this.

The way I see it, is the Oilers are 2 top 6 forwards, a 3C and a top 4 puck moving dman from being legitimate threats. With a couple contracts off the books, Im hoping that is the goal in the offseason. As for this season, I think they just stay the course, maybe add a 3C and hopefully win a round or two in the playoffs.

Trading the 1st for a rental is not a great idea. Trading the 1st (with top-10 protection) for a good young player under team control could work out quite well - depending on who it is.

Even then, other years I don’t mind it, but this draft is incredibly deep and I don’t think it’s smart to move out the first

That’s how Tippett had the lines in practice, just basing it off of that

Ottawa politely declines.

Not worth us taking 2.1M for a guy who would play bottom 6 if were just upgrading a 5th to a 4th.

I think Montreal would rather have the contract spot than Gagner

What good is that contract spot going to do you after the deadline?

Let us sign a guy from the CHL or Europe.

Montreal only has 47 contracts though and Gagner's contract ends July 1st, I don't think it's an issue.

It's still always good to have flexibility. 3 spots isn't alot when you factor in potential draft trades and/or European signings. I honestly think Edmonton could get more value from someone else

Only 13 teams have fewer than 47 contracts on the books right now. It's really not a big deal.

No, but it makes no sense to pick up a 3 Million dollar contract, take another contract spot and not even get an asset out of it.

The trade above is taking on 25% of a $2.15M contract in order to obtain depth for a playoff run while moving a handful of spots in the 5th round.
