Willy Nye

Created by: tony135420
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 7, 2019
Published: Dec. 10, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Nylander is expendable IMO. LA needs offensive punch, which Willy has in spades, and he's locked in for 4 more years. Walker is a solid rhd, Toffoli is a great fit beside Tavares and Campbell is a solid backup with term. Fair value?

If you trade him, at least trade him for something valuable

If Nylander could have gotten the Leafs Alex Pietrangelo last season, 1 for 1, who was not a rental at the time, and Nylander has done nothing but up his value this season, and make his contract look pretty damn good, why would the Leafs ever do this? Because the sum of the parts is better than the sum of the player going the other way? No way. Does Toffoli, Walker and Campbell equal Pietrangelo (with an additional year left on his contract). Absolutely not. Therefore, I would argue Nylander's value, without the inclusion of Ceci (it's beyond me why Leaf fans keep including him deals) is way beyond what the return would be in this deal.

The piece for piece value is bad, but the above team has 4M in cap space, a better backup goalie, a slightly better blue line, and a different 20 goal wing who hasn't gotten many assists yet, but hasn't played with many 40G centers yet, either. Can they do better? Probably. Is this a good place for the Leafs to be in? Yes.

It's really a CapFriendly rumour about Nylander for Pietrangelo. Had GM Armstrong asked his captain to waive his NTC? Really does anyone really know?

I could see why the Leafs would want the cost efficient and the cost efficient Campbell who is signed for this season and two more years.. Do the Kings really want to take on more cap for Nylander.
Gee, I don't why there is so much distain for Ceci. Again it's more a CapFriendly rumour that he is so bad. Why does Toffelli get love in any trade?. He's been average to bad for couple of years. This season he on pace for 30 points an a minus 27. Leafs lose on the Toffelli/Ceci trade.
Leafs certainly don't need the poor play and contract of RWer Toffeli even if Nylander is traded. Rather have Ceci who certainly hasn't been the Leafs worse Dman this season.

So really it's a Walker and Campbell for Nylander trade.

If “Cap Space” ever scores the goal that wins us the cup, we all owe you a huge apology.

I was just commenting on the trade. It's really Walker and Campbell for Nylander. Toffelli at 4.6m is negative player in every which way, but somehow, not having the OK Ceci and replacing with a non scoring, no defence forward is good for the Leafs?

"Expendable" and "lets trade him for a pile of assets that don't improve the team" are two entirely different things.

I agree, I hate this trade. No real value for the leafs. The more I see of sandin and liljegren the less worried I am about our blueline. To be honest if we decided to trade ceci this year... our Dcore could be immediately better. I like the idea of giving them time to developer fully though.

It's always a difficult decision for fans or hockey executives to decide if an AHLer is truly NHL good. And AHL stats are so misleading. Point totals are virtually meaningless as we have seen over the years top offensive leaders in the AHL are often busts in the NHL. You're right, is this year the proper time to promote Sandin/Liljegren" I would say no just because the Leafs have been so average to poor most of the season, so it's not like the kids are gonna get much help.
If Sandin comes and plays LD...who is RHD parter? Barrie...gag. Holl...Holl seems to need an NHLer like Dermot or Muzzin this year. Dermot going to the right side might be situation for Sandin. In the meantime..it's Ceci which might not be worse alternative to remain a Leaf. But you're right, optimistic about next year but still need some cap space to fill a couple of Dman holes.
