Trade For Marner

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 11, 2019
Published: Dec. 11, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think Pens fans were all very excited to see them acquire a player as talented as Alex Galchenyuk. Unfortunately it hasn’t worked out for him and the team should just move on from him, hopefully flip him for a 3rd round pick or something at this point.

I’ve seen people suggest the team should trade for Taylor Hall, however, I really don’t see him as a good option for this team. Indeed, he’s a highly skilled winger with loads of speed, however, he’s really seems to be a more talented version of Galchenyuk who wouldn’t really fit in well with Mike Sullivan’s plans. Keep in mind Sullivan didn’t particularly like Kessel either.

To me, a star Forward who would fit well with Sullivan and Crosby would be Mitch Marner. He offers everything that they are looking for: elite skillset, speed, forecheck and defensively responsible. I know he has a huge contract and it would cost a lot to get him, but this is the star winger who I think could be used well in this team.

I just don't see it. I dont think Leafs want to get rid of him and not for that package. Andersen is just as good as Murray, Barrie is a better Schultz, late first round pick won't do anything for them

Maybe Jarry Addison Hallander 2 first round picks + a winger (Kahun/McCann), which it too much for pittsburgh

They get NHL caliber defenseman and goalie. Plus 1st which they can use to draft another elite defense prospect.

They have Andersen so they don't need Murray. Schultz isn't bad, but if they're trading Marner they're looking for an established legit top pairing defenceman. Not to mention that Schultz is in the last year of his contract and is 29 years old. First round pick from a team as good as the penguins doesn't make it worth it either. You're a long way off from fair value.

1st of all - I love Marner, Im an absolute fan of his but do Not see Toronto trading him at all.
2nd - Dont sleep on Murr's - He has had a bad patch almost every yr in NHL (or gets hurt) - Remember he basically carried us into playoffs last yr.

So a late first to get a player that may or may not work for them in 3ish years.

An RHD who has been fairly bad since he signed his contract and will be a UFA this summer.

And a goalie that will be an RFA that they would need to pay this summer, despite already having a better and consistent starting goalie?

All in return for a 22-year-old coming off a 90 point season? Is that right? Ummm ok then.

I could see them taking it personally. Not the trade in itself, but be offended that the pens would only offer that for Marner lol

As above, would need to add much more value for a Marner trade to be considered.

Theres a reason they say the team who gets the best player wins the trade. not to paint marner as a god or discredit any of murray, schultz or a 1st, but sometimes the value of the package isn't the sum of all the parts. This is a trade a rebuilding team makes.

Well, Marner is not going to fetch you a top pairing defenseman and Schultz is very good. No team is going to trade their top defenseman for 11 million dollar winger.

This trade meets the requirement of TOR’s most desperate need though.

Schultz had a very solid 2017/18 season defensively. In 2018-19, he suffered a serious injury. This season, he’s played well but Marino has overtaken him. I would not trade Marino for Marner however.

The value is probably a little off. But keep in mind, the Leafs are desperate for goaltending and defense. They are in cap hell therefore it may come down to the point where they have no choice but to trade away one of their top forwards.

I hope you’re joking. If not you really need to brush up on NHL players.
