The penguins are currently the 2nd WC spot in the east. With what is probably 2 other teams nipping at their heals. I think it's like 1 point holding them in there.
I wouldn't go holding my breath that the penguins are making deadline moves. Especially one's like this.

Toronto key piece is trading the cap for space to make other deals. I am well aware you don't want Folin, send him to the AHL, his entire cap can be buried.

It's a pretty unspectacular trade. Depth winger for picks. Swap Pens with any team looking for a depth winger for the playoffs + next year.

I think it's more the point that people think the penguins are buyers. I wouldn't hold my breath on that. There is still a lot of hockey to be played, but the other teams have all played so well that even with a good team they are sitting on the bubble. The metro is as always stacked.

I didn't see getting Weal as a "buyers" trade. Seems like Pens cycle through wingers, and another year for Weal might be why they do it. If not, no biggie.

And now we are putting ourselves in a position of greater weakness in terms of negotiation ability? If Ceci is traded his replacement is coming back in the same deal.

Weal isn't a cap dump.

- Too much for Weal. I think a 5th would be the best we could hope for. The guy is a 13th forward on most teams. I know we're happy with what he's doing here in Montreal but can't get too excited either.
- Byron trade might work but the fact that Byron has 4 years left makes me believe teams might be hesitant. If Gagner had another year after this one, i think that would offset enough but since he is a pending UFA, i think Habs have to find a team willing to send us another player with similar cap/term for it to work. I know we all have fond memories of Byron but the reality is he's 30 years old signed for 4 more years and has been injury prone the past two seasons. The time to trade him for good value was last year. Not now.
- Folin for Ceci and a 2nd is way too much. Fine they get some cap space but now they got to go out and pay another couple picks to get another RHD. In the end its too expensive. Ceci is still an NHL'er at the end of the day. if the price is low enough someone will pay a pick to get him. He's a UFA at seasons end and his cap hit will be less important once the playoffs come along.
- Reilly for Hanzal makes no sense. Hanzal in on LTIR. Dallas doesn't need to move him. No way they'd pay a 2nd rounder just to get rid of him and get Reilly back.

The EDM one could work but since Gagner is a pending UFA at seasons end, Habs would have to either retain some salary or get less good picks back in return for Byron for it to even work. IMO.

laugh laugh

Byron: on pace to score 15 points this season. 30 years old. Cap hit this year: $3.4M. Signed for 3 more years after this at $3.4M.
Gagner: on pace to score 30 points this season. 30 years old. Cap hit this year: $3.1M. Signed for 0 more years after this at $0.

I think you have the picks on the wrong side! tears of joy

Many in your fanbase feel the upgrade is coming from the Marlies, Liljegren.
