I don't know if the defence is a lot worse. Barrie is being replaced by DeMelo. Certainly Barrie has been poor most of the season. Not sure about DeMelo and his value. Liljegren and Sandin have to brought up sometime and they have been good with the Marlies. So they replace Muzzin and Ceci.
Leafs do the option of trading a cap forward to get cap space and getting a better Dman. Seems like so many just hate the thought of trading a Leaf forward.

Rielly - Dermot
Muzzin - Holl
Sandin - Liljegren

Or you switch it up and have Dermot on the bottom pair with one of Liljegren or Sandin and move the other up with Rielly. It would probably be an adventure at times but I think both Sandin and Liljegren are going to be good top 4 defenceman.
