Edmonton counters with Jesse Puljujarvi, their 2020 2nd Round Pick, and the 2021 3rd round pick for Pageau extended at $4.5M/4y

For the only time in his career. Historically, he's been a #3C since the day he stepped onto NHL ice. I'm not paying for what you think Pageau is worth just because he's the only player in that miserable franchise capable of scoring goals this season. Third-line centers go for - on average - a second round pick. Puljujarvi and the 2021 3rd Round Pick is more than enough compensation for extending him.

So you San Jose to take Names for a second rounder? Now you have the Sharks 1st and 2nd picks. Could be # 5 and 36 overall.

Hes one of the top 3C in the league and can fill that 2 spot. Is one of the best defensive centres in the league, capable of shutting down other teams best player, known as a playoff performers with 2 hat tricks in the playoffs. Been Ottawa's best playoff performer the last 3 playoffs. Shall I go on

So he's worth a second round pick and a little bit more? Like a third round pick? Sounds like adding a prospect could be enough to seal the deal on an extension too. Thanks!

Hes worth much more than a 2nd. A prospect (B level) and a 1st or a (B+ or A- prospect) and a 2nd/3rd

So Puljujarvi, this year's second, and next year's third. Got it.

I agree with you. Although you can add a conditional 1st depending on playoff performance. Say 2nd round in 2020 that becomes a 1st if Edmonton reaches the Cup Final. A guaranteed pick and prospect is a must though. There is way too much risk given Puljujarvi's issue so Yamamoto/Bear and a 2nd in 2020* is a respectable ask.

Puljujarvi's producing at a higher pace than Yamamoto in an AHL-equivalent league. The only "issue" with Puljujarvi is that he wants nothing more to do with the Edmonton Oilers, and there's nobody who can blame him for that based on how frequently they mishandled him. I'd argue that due to his production and lack of injuries that he'd be more valuable than Yamomoto.

There's no outcome where Edmonton agrees to either a 1st Round Pick or Ethan Bear.

Then you have no basis for prospect analysis. If you value Yamamoto, you should value Puljujarvi higher.

I want Yamamoto because of his connection to some of our prospects. I value that

Knowing a guy ain't worth much in the long run. Why not just add the better prospect?

I was under the assumption there was more to it than just playing in Edmonton. Thought it was more the Canadian market issue and not being guaranteed top 6 minutes. Regardless, there is no guarantee he'll come back to play in the NHL. Need something more reassuring then "maybe Puljujarvi".

I'm also in the camp that, unless there is a significant offer for Pageau (I.E a 1st round +), he should stay in Ottawa and remain a shutdown 2-3 C. He might be slightly overpaid when the time comes to offer him a contract (close to 4 over 4), but its better then a low 2nd pick and a potential prospect.

I'm almost dead certain Puljujarvi has publicly stated that he'd sign an NHL deal immediately outside of Edmonton. If it's a massive risk still, the guarantee of a signed Puljujarvi can be had before the trigger is pulled.

What serves the Senators better? Being a basement team with Pageau then seeing him walk over the summer or being a basement team without Pageau, but retaining additional draft capital and an extra prospect?
